Nedum Onuoha outlines Man City advantage in trophy hunt this season

Former defender Nedum Onuoha has hinted that Manchester City’s strength in depth could give them a huge helping hand in their battle to win silverware this season.

Onuoha, who played for City between 2004 and 2012, made the admission following his former club’s 6-3 win over RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening at the Etihad Stadium.

Although they were guilty of conceding three goals, City once again oozed plenty of class and quality in the final third, despite making four changes to the side that had beaten Leicester City 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.

Manager Pep Guardiola’s ability to make four changes and still be able to pick a side capable of scoring six goals speaks volumes about the strength in depth and quality he has available to him.

And for former City centre-back Onuoha, it is that ability to be able to call on such sheer levels of talent that makes City a force to be reckoned with, pointing to how much Liverpool missed such key figures through injury last season by not having like-for-like replacements available.

Onuoha told Football Daily : “I think given what we saw last year, when a few of them started to go down [injured], we started to see a different sort of Liverpool, whereas with City and Chelsea, when one or two people aren’t there, it doesn’t feel like you have that huge dependency.

“Even though they are quality players who do drop out, somebody coming in is still very, very good. City brought Phil Foden off the bench and brought Fernandinho on for Rodri and stuff like this.

“You can’t help but feel positive about any sort of situation they might find themselves in because you never feel like that they’re really that stretched.”
