Nederlands Dans Theater 1 provides an abundance of new energy

NNNNNNNNNNNN by choreographer William Forsythe by Nederlands Dans Theater 1.Statue Rahi Rezvani

You have to like a little bit of physical thinking. Anyone who puts together an afternoon-filling program with three choreographies from the oeuvre of ballet innovator William Forsythe (71) knows that the spectator is challenged to follow Forsythe’s postmodern ideas about the deconstruction of language and movement. Anyone who dares to do so will receive Woven State from Nederlands Dans Theater 1, however, also an exciting gift.

Forsythe, for example, unexpectedly created a new work for the top group of the company from The Hague, purely via a video connection: NNNNNNNNNNNN In this he stays true to his creative way of modular building with choreographic elements. Originally is NNNN a studious quartet from 2002, in which he investigates how four male dancers can write a musical dance score together with the swing of an arm, the bend of a knee and the drop of a leg. Increasingly faster they perform this tight form of body percussion with rhythmic slaps. However hurriedly they come to slide or extend a limb far, they have to stay in contact with each other and try to get exactly at each other’s chest or forehead. The title refers to nothing more than the ‘letter’ position that the four bodies occupy at a given moment.

For NDT1, he has now tripled this quartet into a group work for 12 dancers. However, this multiplication produces an abundance of new energy, as if all kinds of intimate musical relationships within a string quartet have been extrapolated to those in a chamber orchestra. In flowing training outfit, the dancers shoot at each other from the sides and back again and again to freeze for a moment in movement themes. You can recognize counterpoints in the rapidly changed setups. The rhythm is created in silence by breaths and blows on the skin. Until the last breath of air.

Nederlands Dans Theater 1 provides an abundance of new energy

Nicole Ishimaru and Luca Tessarini in Of Any If And by choreographer William Forsythe by Nederlands Dans Theater 1.Statue Rahi Rezvani

Also during the closing of the program, One Flat Thing Reproduced (2000), it is the overwhelming group energy that does it for him. In a tight arrangement of twenty tables, fourteen dancers run and fly through the ‘trenches’ and over the table tops. Defying all danger, they elongate the body lines of raised legs and horizontally gliding bodies with perilous jumps up and under the tables. The complex structure channels their hunted motor skills into a fountain of physical energy.

Sandwiched in between Of Any If And (1995) not quite finished yet. The stream of words, whispered live by Luca Tessarini and Nicole Ishimaru, is somewhat lost in the overwhelming soundscape of Thom Willems, full of electronic scraping sounds and air bubbles, in the new dance hall of the cultural center Amare in The Hague. But the two dancers, who keep popping out of the black boxes, perform their intense duets with maniacal precision. A leg goes flawlessly next to an ear in the six o’clock position and then a hip swings out of balance. It is physical thinking in pure form: strength and surrender at the same time.
