Nearly 10 million scheme workers, including the anganwadi, ASHA and mid-day meal workers will observe one day nationwide strike on Friday demanding government to provide them risk allowance and insurance cover during Covid duty while seeking regularisation of their appointment so that they are entitled to minimum wages, social security and pension among other benefits.
The joint platform of scheme workers, consisting of the organisations of scheme workers affiliated to the central trade union have called for the strike, which is expected to bring basic health and nutrition facilities to a halt, impacting millions of people especially mothers and children in rural India.
The central trade unions involved include the INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, AICCTU, LPF and UTUC.
“The scheme workers through this strike, are pressing for the immediate demands of safety at work, risk allowance and insurance cover during covid duty and long pending demands of regularization as workers, minimum wages, social security and pension and against privatization,” the joint platform of scheme workers’ federation said in a statement on Thursday.
The 45th Indian Labour Conference had recommended regularization, minimum wages and pension to all scheme workers.
India has an estimated one million ASHA workers, another 2.6 million Anganwadi workers and 2.7 million mid-day meal workers along with millions of workers employed under various government schemes to facilitate flow of benefits of government schemes to the intended beneficiaries.
The federation, will on Friday, submit its memorandum to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking notifying all scheme workers as frontline workers to make them eligible for Covid-duty related benefits including a death cover.
“Provide Rs 50 lakhs insurance cover to all frontline workers covering all deaths on duty while also providing coverage for total expenses for treatment for Covid-19 for the entire family,” it said.
Further, the scheme workers have demanded an additional covid risk allowance of Rs 10,000 per month for all the contract and scheme workers engaged in Covid -19 duty while seeking immediate clearance of all dues pending to them, among others.Internet Explorer Channel Network
