NBA Award Winners 2024: MVP, Most Improved, Defensive Player, Rookie of the Year and More

The official list of the 2024 NBA award winners is finally here. The league has been announcing award winners since the end of April, and that culminated on Wednesday, May 8 with the official announcement of the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Here is the entire list of award winners from the 2023-24 season, starting with the MVP.

2023-24 NBA Most Valuable Player

Winner: Nikola Jokic, Denver Nuggets

Runners-Up: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City Thunder; Luka Doncic, Dallas Mavericks

Jokic wins his third MVP in four seasons, joining exclusive company with players to win at least three such awards. Jokic is the ninth player in NBA history to win at least three MVPs, and is the sixth player to win three in a four-year span.

Jokic averaged 26.4 points, 12.4 rebounds and 9.0 assists per game while shooting 58.3 percent from the field. He made his sixth straight All-Star team, and has now finished top 10 in MVP voting in every year since 2018-19.

2023-24 NBA Defensive Player of the Year

Winner: Rudy Gobert, Minnesota Timberwolves

Runners-Up: Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs; Bam Adebayo, Miami Heat

Gobert dominated the DPOY race yet again, getting 72 of the 99 first-place votes. He wins his fourth DPOY award, tying Ben Wallace and Dikembe Mutombo for the most in NBA history. Gobert averaged 12.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game this season, and is the first player to win this award with the Timberwolves.

2023-24 NBA Rookie of the Year

Winner: Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs

Runners-Up: Chet Holmgren, Oklahoma City Thunder; Brandon Miller, Charlotte Hornets

Wembanyama was the expected Rookie of the Year the minute he was drafted by the Spurs with the No. 1 overall pick. He enjoyed a historically dominant first year in San Antonio, leading all rookies in points, rebounds and blocks per game. He was also the first player in NBA history to average at least 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in fewer than 30 minutes per game.

Wembanyama received all 99 first-place votes, becoming the first unanimous ROY winner since Karl-Anthony Towns in 2015-16.

2023-24 NBA Most Improved Player

Winner: Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia 76ers

Runners-Up: Coby White, Chicago Bulls; Alperen Sengun, Houston Rockets

Maxey beat out White in a very close race, despite getting a majority of the first-place votes (51 to 32). Maxey was an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2023-24, and saw a 5.6 point per game increase and a 2.7 assist per game increase. He also recorded three 50-plus point games, which was tied for the league lead. They were the first three 50-point games of his four-year career.

2023-24 NBA Sixth Man of the Year

Winner: Naz Reid, Minnesota Timberwolves

Runners-Up: Malik Monk, Sacramento Kings; Bobby Portis, Milwaukee Bucks

Reid edged out Monk for the award in the closest award race, getting just two more first-place votes. Reid set career highs in points (13.5) and rebounds (5.2) per game, while shooting a career-best 41.4 percent from deep. He appeared in 81 games for the Timberwolves, and played 24.2 minutes per game as the league’s best reserve.

2023-24 NBA Clutch Player of the Year

Winner: Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors

Runners-Up: DeMar DeRozan, Chicago Bulls; Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City Thunder

Curry just beat out DeRozan for the award in another close race. Curry led the league with 189 points in clutch situations, and shot 49.6 percent from the field, 45.7 percent from deep, and 95.1 percent from the free throw line in clutch time.

2023-24 NBA Coach of the Year

Winner: Mark Daigneault, Oklahoma City Thunder

Runners-Up: Jamahl Mosley, Orlando Magic; Chris Finch, Minnesota Timberwolves

Daigneault dominated the Coach of the Year voting, taking home 89 of the 99 first-place votes. His Thunder had a surprise run to the top of the Western Conference, going from 40-42 in 2022-23 to 57-25 in 2023-24, and securing the No. 1 seed in a tough Western Conference.
