Nazir Razak drives passengers around KL in AirAsia publicity video

Nazir Razak, the younger brother of Malaysia’s disgraced ex-prime minister, seems to be doing his good friend a favor by joining AirAsia’s latest promotional video.

For four hours around Kuala Lumpur, the 54-year-old was filmed driving passengers who presumably booked a ride on the airline’s ride-hailing service as part of publicity that has displeased some viewers thinking that Nazir was pretending to be part of the working class.

Dressed in the airline’s branded red t-shirt, the former CIMB chairman picked up roughly six people and even gave some of them financial advice.

“You gotta play it safe… in terms of your savings. I always think that one must have rainy day money,” he said, when someone asked for financial tips. We wonder if he ever gave that advice to his brother, who is currently embroiled in a scandal linked to the alleged looting of the people’s money.

Nazir is currently a non-executive chairman of the PLS Plantation civil engineering firm. When a passenger quipped about racial segregation in the country, however, he didn’t have much to say.

“So, I’ve been thinking a lot about how it (Malaysia) went wrong, and what we can do about it,” Nazir said. But his statement ended there.

He also asked another to give him a rating and tip on the AirAsia ride app.

At the end of the day, Nazir earned RM67 (US$16) for his work, which is probably world’s apart from what he’s earning right now. But he still thinks that being a driver is a “pretty good living.”

The video has been viewed more than 15,000 times since it went up yesterday.

“A rich person pretending to be poor,” YouTuber user Panglima Hitam commented below.

“Can rich people stop cosplaying as the precarious and poor? CAN THEY STOP,” Twitter user FujiyamaOden implored today in a reply to a tweet about Nazir’s exploits.
