A former Grimsby Town FC player who played for the club more than 200 times has sadly died.
Peter Handyside moved to the area from his native Scotland and began playing for the Mariners youth team in 1990. Between 1992 and 2001, he played for the club hundreds of times, and was an “integral” part of the team that achieved the Wembley double in 1997 and 1998.
Grimsby Town FC announced the sad news of Peter’s passing in a poignant statement, and said everyone at the club has been left “heartbroken” by the news.
The full statement reads: “Everyone at the football club is heartbroken to learn of the untimely passing of former player Peter Handyside.
“Peter moved to Blundell Park from his native Scotland in 1990 and, after progressing through our youth system, he went on to feature over 200 times for the club between 1992 and 2001.
A minutes’ applause will be held before today’s game
“The classy defender was a regular in the Mariners backline throughout the 90s and was an integral part of Alan Buckley’s team that achieved a historic Wembley double in 1997-98.
“Our thoughts are with Peter’s family at this sad time.
“Once a Mariner, always a Mariner.”
Taking to Twitter, Grimsby Town FC confirmed that a minutes’ applause will be held before kick-off this afternoon in memory of Peter Handyside. Players will also be wearing black armbands.
