National cabinet to discuss violence against women crisis
Well, breaking right now, the Prime Minister has just announced a $925 million funding boost over five years. Straight after an emergency meeting of national cabinet to find a solution to the domestic violence crisis, we’ll go live to our political reporter Amanda Karp. Amanda, good morning. What’s come out of this meeting? Good morning, Davina. Yeah, there are some big announcements here that $925 million will go towards the Leaving Violence program, which is designed to assist women leaving abusive relationships. Women will be able to get up to $5000 in financial help and be connected with a range of support and safety services. The political leaders also discussed how to better control access to violent content online with the aim of directing young boys and men away from violent pornography. The federal government will also create legislation that introduces harsh criminal penalties for deep fake pornography. The Prime Minister pointing to the devastating statistics that this year one woman has died at the hands of a man every four days. We want to change this in a way in which we all have to take responsibility, because violence against women is not a women’s problem to solve, it is a whole of society problem to solve and men in particular have have to take responsibility. There will also be a concerted government advertising campaign to be rolled out online that combat harmful online content.
