Renowned Hindustani classical musician, Dr Malkit Singh Jandiala, enthralled audiences with his performance at Tagore Theatre recently. Dr Malkit showcased his expertise by reciting a raga from the revered Shri Guru Granth Sahib.
The event, organized by an art and cultural Trust in collaboration with Pracheen Kala Kendra, received a warm response from art and music enthusiasts in the Tricity.
Justice Vinod S Bhardwaj, Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was the Chief Guest while Charan Singh Sapra, former Trustee of Hazur Sahib, unveiled a book on Gurmat Sangeet authored by Dr Malkit Singh – ‘Aadi Granth Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ka Raag Prabandh.’
Expressing his gratitude, Dr Malkit Singh stated, “I am overwhelmed by the response from the audience. It is truly heartening to witness their immense interest in the art of ragas. Preserving our heritage and passing it on to future generations requires collective efforts, and this enthusiastic participation is a positive sign.”
Amardeep Singh Dahiya, the Founder of the Trust, commended Dr Malkit Singh’s performance, saying, “Dr Singh lived up to his esteemed reputation and mesmerized the audience with his captivating rendition. He took us on a melodic journey that transcended boundaries and resonated with the timeless essence of classical music.”
Dahiya also highlighted the presence of young boys and girls at the event, emphasising the importance of introducing Indian traditions to the youth. The objective was to nurture a genuine appreciation for Hindustani music and integrate them into the mainstream while connecting them with India’s rich musical heritage.

The event also honoured several accomplished individuals with Lifetime Achievement Awards. Gurmeet Singh Shant, Hajuri Ragi of Shri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar; Dr Shobha Koser, Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee & senior Kathak guru; Dr Pankaj Mala Sharma, former Dean and Chairperson of PU; and Pandit Kale Ram Ji, a maestro of the Punjab Gharana, were recognized for their contributions to the field of music.
Sajal Koser, Secretary of Pracheen Kala Kendra, expressed the joy of music enthusiasts in the Tricity, adding, “The audience in the tricity enjoyed an evening filled with sublime melodies and artistic brilliance as Dr Malkit Singh graced the stage of Tagore Theatre with his musical prowess.”

Dr Malkit Singh’s performance was enhanced by the accompaniment of talented national and international artists. Ustad Akram Khan, representing the Ajrada Gharana, showcased his mastery of the tabla while Sumit Mishra, from Banaras, mesmerized the audience with his skills on the harmonium. Murad Ali Khan, the grandson of the renowned Moradabad Sarangiya Siddiqui Ahmed Khan, showcased his expertise on the sarangee.
