Nagaland firing: Tribal body demands repeal of AFSPA, Assam Rifles to vacate Mon district

Amid outrage over the civilian killing in Nagaland’s Mon district, an influential tribal body has sent a five-point memorandum to the President, seeking action against the defence personnel involved in the incident and repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the entire North East region.

Konyak Union, the tribal body, also demanded to conduct an independent inquiry under a competent investigating agency and vacate the Assam Rifles from Mon district.

“The incident seems to be a complete failure of the intelligent source (s) and well calculated attempt on the innocent civilian and the incident cannot be termed as mistaken identity at all,” the Konyak Union said.

The demands of the Konyak Union are

* Independent inquiry under competent investigating agency to be immediately set up and two members from the Naga civil society must be inducted in the Special Investigation Team.

* To identify all military forces or army personnel involved in the incident and book and punish under applicable civil court; action taken against those erring official (s) at Oting Yatong massacre must be put into public domain within 30 days.

* Assam Rifles must immediately vacate Mon district on moral ground for failing to provide security to its citizens whereby the military forces from other state had intruded and committed the Oting Yatong massacre on 4th December, 2021.

* To immediately repeal AFSPA from the entire North Eastern region.

“The Konyak Union in its’ strongest term condemn this act of barbarism against innocent citizens. The Union shall stand high and firm against the perpetrators and demand immediate probe and book the culprits or perpetuators up to the highest rank as per the applicable civil court,” the tribal body said in its statement.

Meanwhile, the Konyak Students’ Union called a week-long mourning from Tuesday on account of killing of 14 civilians in the firing incidents in Nagaland’s Mon district.

“To start with, there will be complete bandh within Mon district on December 7 from 6 am to 5 pm,” Konyak Students’ Union said in its statement.

The students’ organisation said that public movement will be restricted during the bandh (shutdown) with an exemption on administration, police personnel (para-military not exempted), medical services, fire emergencies, power and PHED.

On December 4, security forces opened fire on civilians, killing 14 and injuring 11 more in Nagaland’s Mon district in three consecutive episodes, the first of which was a case of mistaken identity. One soldier also died in rioting which followed.
