new mansfield school planned for derelict site takes big step forward

Nottinghamshire County Council’s planning application to build a new Special Educational Needs (SEN) school at the former Ravensdale Middle School site off Ravensdale Road, Mansfield has now been submitted to Mansfield District Council

A new school which aims to address a “pressing need” in a Nottinghamshire town has taken a step forward. Nottinghamshire County Council’s planning application to build a new Special Educational Needs (SEN) school at the former Ravensdale Middle School site off Ravensdale Road, Mansfield has now been submitted to Mansfield District Council.

The new school would have capacity for 160 children, with 80 members of staff providing Key Stages 2, 3 and sixth form education. The building would also have CCTV, car parking, a drop-off area, and outdoor play spaces, with existing play surfaces being resurfaced.

The proposals would also alter the existing vehicle access to the site. In planning documents, Nottinghamshire County Council said there was a pressing need within Mansfield and the district for specialist school places and facilities.

The site of the former school, which was demolished years after being closed in 2001, comprises the overgrown former playing pitch, tarmac playground and tennis court and the remains of the torn down school building. The area was fenced off following the demolition, but planning documents explain the majority of this fencing has been stolen.

This has allowed trespassers to access the site and evidence has been found of anti-social behaviour, substance abuse and fly-tipping, Nottinghamshire County Council’s planning agent said. The planners argued the school would regenerate the derelict area and bring economic and environmental benefits to the local community.

When the project was first announced, Councillor Keith Girling, cabinet member for Economic Development and Asset Management at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “This is a major step forward to ensuring we have sufficient places for all our SEND children in the Mansfield and Ashfield area.

“Expanding our SEND provision is key to us delivering on our commitment to provide good schools with enough places to ensure all young people across the county have opportunities to achieve their potential and get the best possible start in life.”

The school has been designed to reflect the individual requirements of the students attending the school, as some children may be sensitive to light, sound, taste and touch. It is hoped the school would alleviate pressures elsewhere in mainstream schools which do not have the facilities to cater for some pupils.

Mansfield District Council’s environmental health team, which has been consulted on the application, said it had no objections to the new school. The planning application is pending consideration by Mansfield District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council.
