Mum forced to live in vile mould-ridden council flat ‘not fit for DOGS' as her daughters, 2 and 9, suffer coughing fits

Asia's Tech News Daily

A 'DEPRESSED' mum has been forced to live in a sickening mould-ridden home “not fit for DOGS” as her children suffer coughing fits from being in the flat.

Imogen Page, 28, has been living with awful mould and damp in her home in Kingston, South London, since April 2020 – but her council have done “nothing” to help despite her desperate pleas.

Her council flat is ridden with mould and silverfish, and her walls constantly leak from the damp – which one councillor from Kingston described as not suitable for DOGS to live in.

The mum-of-two revealed that her youngest daughter Bonnie-Lee, who is non-verbal and has autism, has been rushed to hospital five times in the last year with respiratory problems.

The two-year-old tot coughs to the point that she can't breathe and has needed an ambulance sent to the home – thought to be caused by the appalling damp and mould.

And her nine-year-old daughter Teresa also suffers from serious coughs, which she also believes is a result of the horrific mouldy home.

Imogen says she's nearly lost everything because of the horror mould – and all she wants is for the council to listen and move her out of the “depressing” flat.

Speaking to the Sun Online about her living situation, Imogen said: “I have mould in every single room except my kitchen. There is no wall in my bathroom that doesn't have mould on it.

“It's never-ending in this flat. When I get my clothes out, they stink of mould. My walls are constantly cold and wet.

“I've currently got a leak coming in from my neighbour upstairs. It's in my hallway, so all my linen in my airing cupboard has now been covered in mould.

“The leak is going around my lights. If my daughter pulls on that light, this a massive problem.

“My walls are leaking. You could see there are dripping marks. I just don't want to live here anymore, it's making me so depressed.”

As well as the appalling living situation, Ms Page revealed that her family's health has deteriorated since the problems started.

She said: “My youngest daughter has been in hospital five times with infections in the last year, and she has autism.

“She got Croupe out of nowhere. I had to get an ambulance called out to take her to hospital because she was coughing and couldn't breathe.

MOULD 'EVERYWHERE'

“I've got an older daughter who is nine, she gets really bad coughs. She's got a heart murmur.”

The situation has got so bad that the mum-of-two doesn't want to come back to her home when she leaves – and her daughter is embarrassed to bring her friends around after school.

Imogen added: “I have silverfish everywhere. I can't even have flooring in my bedroom or my girls' room because the mould over it will just ruin it.

“My bedroom is terrible. I have to sleep on top of all of the mould. I slept in my front room on a mattress for weeks.

“I tried to go to the doctors and I told them it's just making me depressed. When I go out, I don't want to come home.

“I don't know how to deal with it anymore. I'm losing everything I've bought, and I'm a single parent. Everything is getting ruined.

“My daughter doesn't want her friends coming over here because it's just disgusting, it's embarrassing.”

Single mum Imogen said that she has been “through hell and back” with Kingston council, and one representative agreed that it's a “disgrace” that the young family have been “totally ignored.”

Emails seen by the Sun Online show Ms Page begging for help from her council 18 months ago – but recent images show that her flat has continued to deteriorate.

The mum-of-two said she was told they would move her out of the dire flat in January 2020 – but the promise was never fulfilled.

And now all she asks is that she's moved out of the mouldy home for the sake of her children's health.

She said: “They told me there were going to move me out in January but they didn't do that. I packed everything up in boxes and they're still sitting in my hallway.

“I went through my boxes and my daughter's clothes, my pots and pans, they're all covered in mould. I've lost a chest of drawers and my sofa because of the mould. It's all over my radiator covers.

“It feels like they (the council) are against me. I just want them to move me out.”

SICK CONDITIONS

Councillor Ian George, representing Imogen's ward, said he was “shocked” at the “sickening” conditions the mum-of-two was forced to live in.

And he said that the flat wouldn't even be acceptable for DOGS to live in – let alone a family with young children.

The councillor also said that he has personally tried to lodge complaints with the council's housing department – but his requests have fallen on deaf ears.

He claims the council's housing department is not “fit for service” and that he doesn't know how those responsible can sleep at night – an allegation Kingston council denies.

Cllr George told the Sun Online: “Imogen Page contacted me a few weeks ago as one of her ward councillors, as she was not getting anywhere with Kingston Council.

“I was shocked and appalled at the state of her flat, and at the lack of action from the council. Nobody should have to live like this, let alone with children.

“When Imogen contacted me, she told me of the long history of being ignored by Kingston Council and of the broken promises for moving her and her children into another flat. The multiple photos and videos speak for themselves, it’s sickening.

“As a Conservative ward councillor, I demanded urgent action and for a full detailed report from the LibDem-run Council’s Housing department. Despite using the councillor enquiry service, I am still waiting for a response weeks later.

“If even I, as a ward councillor, can’t get a response or any urgent action from Kingston Council, what hope is there for our residents.

The politician said: “It’s a disgrace that Imogen and her children have been totally ignored, especially with the winter months approaching.

“I am very concerned for their health, with all that damp and mould about. It must also be putting the family under incredible stress.

“Most people wouldn’t find it acceptable to keep dogs in such unsuitable accommodation, let alone a local family. I don’t know how those responsible can sleep at night.”

Councillor Ian George

Kingston Council said in a statement: “Work has been on-going since the beginning of 2020 to resolve the issues Ms Page is having.

“We are in liaison with her and her legal team regarding the actions to be taken to remedy the problem. This is likely to include a temporary move out of her current home to allow the remedial works to go ahead.

“The Council will continue to work with Ms Page to agree an acceptable plan of action and we will continue to address the issues with professional advice as a high priority.

“Ms Page made a disrepair claim at the beginning of 2021 and her housing officer correctly passed this onto our repairs team. Since then, the issue has been a legal matter, and correspondence has gone through Ms Page’s advisors.

“We would like to speak to Ms Page and her advisors about the specification of work required and the availability of temporary accommodation in the Borough for her to consider a move to a different property.

“The Council will continue to work with Ms Page to agree an acceptable plan of action and we will continue to address the issues with professional advice as a high priority.

“We refute the claim that our housing department is not fit for service: we continually monitor our performance and strive to provide the best service for all of our residents.”
