Dhami Govt orders magisterial inquiry into Haldwani violence

The Uttarakhand government has decided to hold magisterial probe into Haldwani mob attack and violence on February 8 as Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami warned that all guilty will be identified and given exemplary punishment that will prove a deterrent on those who resort to violence.

The violence left at least four persons dead and many others injured on February 8 in mob attack on the police and anti-encroachment squad of the municipal corporation.

Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat has been appointed investigating officer to probe the incident that resulted in severe injuries to more than 250 policemen as well.

The probe order issued by the state chief secretary Radha Raturi read: “Following detailed deliberations at all levels in the government it has been decided that seeing its sensitive nature a fair investigation has to be conducted in the February 8 incident at Banbhulpura police station and its surroundings by the Kumaon Commissioner.”

The order has asked Rawat to complete the probe and submit a report within 15 days. “Your personal attention is expected in the probe in light of the sensitivity in the matter,” added the order.

Earlier, the chief minister of the state warned that those involved in the violence will not be spared. They are being identified and will be dealt with sternly as per the law. “Those who tried to disturbe peace and harmony of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand will not be spared at any cost. We will take so harsh action against the rioters that it becomes an example for the future,” he said.

He further said, “We will not tolerate any type of violence and anarchy in the state. Every penny of the vandalised government and private properties will be recovered from the rioters responsible for it no matter how influential they are,” added Dhami.

Meanwhile, Nainital district administration lifted curfew from all other places in the town except Banbhulpur police station in the day. According to the administration law and order situation was fully under control and no untoward incident was reported in the last 48 hours.
