The full list of entries and weights for the Grand National 2024 at Aintree has been revealed.

King George VI Chase winner, Hewick, has been given the top weight of 11st12lb out of the remaining 87 entries in the £1million Randox Grand National. The race will take place at Aintree Racecourse on April 13.

Hewick could be aiming for a daring double win with the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National. Last year’s Aintree champion, Corach Rambler, trained by Lucinda Russell, will carry 11st2lb.

He hopes to become the 10th horse to win the world’s greatest steeplechase twice in just over seven weeks’ time. The British Horseracing Authority’s senior Jump handicapper, Martin Greenwood, has framed the weights for the fifth year running.

They were announced at the traditional lunch at St George’s Hall in Liverpool city centre. Trainers, owners, racing personalities and some well-known faces from Merseyside were present.

Shark Hanlon’s nine-year-old Hewick, who won the Grade One King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, will carry the top weight. But first, he will compete in the Gold Cup at next month’s Cheltenham Festival, where his odds are 16-1.

Hewick is generally priced at 33-1 for the Grand National. He was also entered at this stage last year but had to withdraw due to injury.

Trainer Hanlon has shared that Hewick “probably deserves” the top weight as he aims to be the first horse in 90 years to win both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National in the same season. Hanlon commented: “I knew he’d have top weight. You have to expect that. He probably deserves top weight. I think the trip will suit him. He’s going for the Gold Cup first and please God he comes out of the Gold Cup safe and if he does he’ll definitely head there (to Aintree).

“It’s a mighty day. It’s one of those days you look forward all year to. The National, the Gold Cup and the King George at Kempton they’re the three big days in England aren’t they, so it’s great to have a runner there.

“The most important thing is that he gets good ground. With fewer runners in the race this year there won’t be quite as much weight between us and the horses at the bottom. In previous years the difference could be a fair bit more and we’d be giving more away.

“He won the Galway Plate off nearly top weight, he won the bet365 (Oaksey Chase at Sandown Park) off a big weight. It’s not that he’s not used to carrying top weight and he carries it very well. All is great with him and he couldn’t be better. I’m very, very happy with him.”

Lucinda Russell’s horse, Corach Rambler, is set to compete in the Cheltenham Gold Cup too. After that, he’ll return to Aintree to try and win the National again.

Corach Rambler gave Russell her second win in the race, following One For Arthur’s success six years ago. Jockey Derek Fox, who also rode One For Arthur to victory, did the steering. They beat Irish raider Vanillier by two-and-a-quarter-lengths.

Russell’s two wins have interrupted the recent Irish dominance, with five of the other winners from the past seven renewals coming from Ireland. After finding out that 2023 winner Corach Rambler has been rated 159 and given a weight of 11st2lb, Russell said: “I’d say that’s in line with our expectations. We’re sort of prepping him for the National but the Gold Cup comes first. He’s doing plenty of work at the moment and then we’ll back off with a couple of weeks left. Winning the National is incredibly addictive. When you win it the first time it’s fabulous when you win it the second time you want three and you think ‘We can do it again’! It’s obsessive!”

Trainer Gavin Cromwell was disappointed after Vanillier came second in last year’s Grand National. But now, he’s dreaming of going one better this time.

Vanillier has been performing steadily this season, coming in fifth twice and then 15th out of 25 in a Grade Three at Leopardstown. This year, he’s not too heavy for the National, and his trainer, Cromwell, thinks he has a good shot at winning.

Cromwell said: “I’d have to be happy enough with that. It’s a lovely racing weight and having been second last year it’s got to be expected. He’s been trained for this race really and it’s a case of him coming in the Spring. He is a Spring horse. He’s going to have to improve plenty but he does have the experience of last year.

“We were obviously thrilled to be second in the Grand National but when you’re coming home well like that you do think about what could have been. But it was a great moment. We had lots of luck last year. He went round on the inside and got all the luck you need luck in every National. It’s every trainer’s dream to win the Grand National and we’ll certainly give it a good shot again this year anyway.”

When he heard Vanillier is one of the favourites to win this year, Cromwell just laughed and said, “I won’t be worrying about that … but I hope they’re right!” Cromwell might have more than one horse in the race. At the moment, Letsbeclearaboutit is 24th on the list with a score of 153 and it might carry around 10st10lb.

Speaking about Letsbeclearaboutit, Cromwell said: “He’s a possible for the race. He needs one more run to qualify. He’s likely to go to Cheltenham and hopefully that’ll qualify him but the plan is certainly to go to Aintree.

Two other horses from Cromwell, Limerick Lace rated 147 and carrying 10st-4lb and Malina Girl with a rating of 145 and a weight of 10st2lb are also entered. He continued to say: “Limerick Lace will probably go to Cheltenham. We’ll see how that goes as to whether we go to Aintree. Malina Girl, she’s a fair way down the list but I would like to run her if we can.
