MP hits back after Sunshine Coast venue NightQuarter ordered to close after ‘multiple’ Covid-19 breaches

A live music venue on the Sunshine Coast has been raided and ordered to close over a series of alleged Covid-19 breaches.

The State Government has forced NightQuarter to shut down over “multiple” instances of the venue failing to adhere to Covid-19 restrictions.

The blow is massive for operators Ian Van der Woude and Michelle Christoe after the venue took home Best Regional Venue at the recent 2021 Queensland Music Awards. Mr Van der Woude fired off at the Sunshine Coast Public Health Unit after being ordered to close before a big weekend of events including San Cisco on Saturday night and Daryl Braithwaite on Sunday.

“The direction was issued without giving the venue the right of reply, with the directive commencing at midday less than 24 hours after the issue of the notice and effectively cancelling a live performance by San Cisco on Saturday,” Mr Van der Woude told The Courier-Mail.

“This is devastating news for the music industry that has been doing it tough and a dramatic contrast to the love given to major sporting events hosted at government owned stadiums.

“The directive does not relate to the night-market NightQuarter is known for, but only for the concert space within the precinct.”

Mr Van der Woude couldn’t understand why his 1000-seat venue was being targeted, considering the state allowed a 30,000-strong crowd gather for State of Origin in Townsville on Wednesday.

“It was issued in the same week that Queensland hosted the State of Origin with a capacity crowd of 30,000 – bringing extra seats to fill the stadium beyond capacity with an over $8 million dollar taxpayer bill to host the event – and no restrictions on crowd numbers, with crowded bars and walkways where crowds gathered in close proximity,” he said.

“NightQuarter provides a vital platform for local and touring musicians to earn an income. At all times NightQuarter has been operating in accordance with its approved Health Plan.

“The venue has clearly communicated to its patrons its Covid safe requirements to attend live music events. In fact, it has gone over and above the requirements seen at other state run public events at Government venues where crowds are seen to dancing and cheering to their heroes.”

Politician rips into ‘unfair’ decision

Opposition frontbencher and Sunshine Coast MP Jarod Bleijie went into bat for the venue operators, claiming they were unfairly targeted by the Palaszczuk Government. The venue is in an indoor-outdoor space, with every event ticketed, making contact tracing easy should a case be present.

“They have continually pointed out the Palaszczuk Government’s hypocrisy over Covid-19 rules and now they are reaping the revenge – it’s disgusting,” he said.

“The Government has closed down a small business overnight and now the livelihoods of musicians and crew are in jeopardy and the local economy is going to suffer.”

Mr Bleijie said the footage of the alleged breaches were “absolute rubbish”.

“It’s an indoor/outdoor venue with plenty of fresh air and they’ve done everything required of them,” he continued.

“It’s only a 1000-seat venue and it (a Spacey Jane concert) was a ticketed event where everyone was checked in and contact tracing is easy. A few kids got up out of their seats to dance and that’s what they’ve been pinged on.”

NightQuarter’s website labels itself a “Covid-safe” venue, detailing the precautions taken since 2020 to ensure the wellbeing of customers.

“Our Sunshine Coast precinct has been developed throughout 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. Working closely with Queensland Health, we have built our venue from the ground up based on Covid-Safe policies to provide a safe environment for our guests in this post-pandemic world, for now and into the future,” the website reads.

“We are operating under a Queensland Health approved Covid-Safe plan. Throughout our history, the safety and wellbeing of our guests has been our highest priority with rigorous health and hygiene standards. We have introduced new innovations to ensure your visit to NightQuarter is safe.”
