Popular chain Mowgli has lodged an application to turn the former Barclays branch on Knutsford’s King Street into its second Cheshire site. The site has been vacant since 2021.
The Indian street food chain, founded in Liverpool in 2014, already has a restaurant at Cheshire Oaks. The company has applied for an alcohol licence sllowing the supply of alcohol between the hours of 10am and midnight, seven days a week.
A planning application lodged this month reveals the company’s plan to remodel the shop front on the corner of King Street and Malt Street, with a dark green and gold theme replacing the old black-and-white frontage.

Mowgli, owned by food writer Nisha Katona, currently has 15 restaurants nationwide, with plans for four more, including the new Knutsford venue. The company describes its restaurants as serving “simple food”, inspired by “extremely healthy, often vegan” Indian food.
Kings Street is already popular with Indian restaurants, with Mowgli set to join Shamoli, Margao and Eastern Eastern Revive on the famous narrow street, which boasts a huge selection of other restaurants, including King Street Kitchen, Smokehouse and Cellar, The Botanist, Kampai, Wine & Wallop, Piccolinos, Gusto, and Spanish restaurant Evuna among others.
