Dallas restaurateur cooks with Guy Fieri on ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,’ airing Feb. 2

When Guy Fieri’s episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives premieres Feb. 2, 2024, it will feature Texas entrepreneur Palmer Fortune, who owns East Dallas restaurant Palmer’s Hot Chicken.

Fieri filmed the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives episode at Fortune’s restaurant Porch on the coast of Georgia. But many of the dishes the Flavortown celebu-chef will cook with Fortune will look like food from Lakewood restaurant Palmer’s. That’s because Porch and Palmer’s are both owned by Fortune and have identical menus of Nashville hot chicken, spicy shrimp, salads and Southern sides like collards and pimento cheese grits.

According to the show notes, Food Network watchers can expect to see Fortune’s best-selling Motherclucker, which is a fried chicken sandwich with pimento cheese. Fortune and his team sold about 40,000 Mothercluckers in the past two years at the State Fair of Texas. Fieri has a connection there: He visited the State Fair in 2017.

It should be interesting to see how much Fieri talks about the State Fair or Fortune’s sibling restaurant in Texas.

Fortune says the email inquiry from Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives producers came at a good time: Fortune was looking for more ways to share his hot chicken story with new customers, and Fieri’s Triple D is one of the most famous food-travel shows in the world.

Fieri has been to the Dallas area more than a dozen times, stopping at a diverse selection of restaurants that include Afrah in Richardson, Fred’s Texas Cafe in Fort Worth, and Dallas spots like Louie’s pizza, Pecan Lodge barbecue and Maple and Motor burgers. After Fieri visited Jesus Carmona’s taco shop in Dallas, the restaurant had a line out the door for months. Six years later, Carmona says customers from all over the globe still mention the Food Network show.

Fortune spent two days filming with a production crew. He says Fieri is funny and knowledgeable.

Fortune is choosing to host his Diners-Drive-Ins and Dives watch party in Texas, because Dallas is home. Customers at Palmer’s Hot Chicken can eat some of the dishes Fieri and Fortune cooked together for the show. Palmer’s will have happy hour prices all day.

The team is hopeful for a potential rush of customers.

“We’re really going to use this Triple D platform to welcome new people into our restaurant,” Fortune says.

Palmer’s Hot Chicken is at 6465 E. Mockingbird Lane, Dallas.

The Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives episode featuring Porch in Georgia (a sister restaurant to Palmer’s Hot Chicken in East Dallas) premieres at 8 p.m. Feb. 2, 2024.
