Most pop venues and festivals are ‘with difficulty’ in favor of 2G: ‘On the condition that it is temporary’

corona ticketMost event makers in the Netherlands are in favor of reopening the sector with a so-called 2G corona ticket. With such proof, only cured or vaccinated people are allowed to enter a concert or festival. Event makers do set a strict requirement: the measure must be temporary and concerts and festivals must be able to take place at one hundred percent capacity. “Many of us can no longer afford ‘the luxury’ of being too principled.”

Last Monday, the cabinet froze the controversial plan to exclude unvaccinated people. There is a lack of sufficient political support and at the same time it is too early to reopen sectors. However, there is still a chance that 2G will eventually be introduced in various sectors. According to corona minister Hugo de Jonge, the measure is ‘really necessary’. “Otherwise, sectors such as the night catering industry will remain closed. And we also want events to start again,” he said Monday afternoon.

Industry discussion

The event sector is in full agreement on the latter. But internally there is a lot of discussion about whether or not to introduce 2G, Berend Schans, chairman of the Dutch Poppodia and Festivals Association, told this site. “As a united music venues, we consider hospitality and human rights to be of paramount importance. 2G is therefore a difficult matter,” he says. There is a lot of ‘fundamental discussion’ about this internally. “We have great difficulty with the possible exclusion that this can cause.”

Still, about 70 percent of affiliated members are in favor of opening with 2G. “Especially because it is a business necessity and ‘damage control’. Many of us can no longer afford the ‘luxury’ of being too principled. Moreover, with reopening we can keep the ailing ‘chain’ working. Only in this way can freelancers and pop artists in our part of the cultural sector earn an income,” explains Berends.

Crucial

According to the Association of Event Makers (VVEM), festivals and pop venues lose about 20 percent of visitors when they start working with 2G. “We prefer not to cooperate with it, because we are faced with a wide range of visitors,” says spokesman Willem Westermann. According to him, the industry is already taking the arrival of the controversial measure into account. are already working on it. However, the cabinet has chosen to lift it over the turn of the year. The question is how long it will take.”

Westermann is certainly not a fan of 2G, but does see opportunities for the sector. “If we can open fully with this without other restrictions, then we can get back to work. We must nevertheless look at a way of working that is both profitable and safe.” The support packages that the sector is receiving from The Hague are sufficient for the time being, Westermann indicates. “But the question is for how long. We hope this summer. to run at full strength, but then the support packages will have to be extended, which is crucial.”

Concert organizer MOJO does not want to say too much about the matter and supports the reaction of the VVEM. “We see it as something that is completely up to the government to decide whether and how. If it contributes to opening up our sector more quickly, that sounds like an idea that we will (have to) work on.”

Theaters

Theater expert Cornald Maas is now very cynical about the culture sector, now that the caretaker cabinet has put the 2G rules on the shelf. “Well, catering, events, theaters: put thick lines in the diaries at the beginning of 2022”, Maas predicted on Twitter on Monday. “Thanks to the not firm cabinet that wants to please future coalition members CDA & CU. dismissed as a sector with a ‘high risk of infections’? #Fake news’.

The cultural sector has been forced to close theaters or to receive a very limited number of visitors for the past two years almost continuously. For two weeks, the theaters have had to close at 5 p.m. and can only receive households with a distance of 1.5 meters between them. The cultural institutions feel, once again, that they have been neglected by the caretaker cabinet.

Mayors

The mayors in the Security Council think differently about 2G. “It is a sensitive discussion. Then you have to tell people that they can only enter if they have been vaccinated or cured. You can only apply this policy if it also has a demonstrable effect,” said Mayor Bruls van Nijmegen, who is not in favor of the measure.

The mayors find it a pity that the outgoing cabinet is now deferring that 2 or 3G decision. “The cabinet is not sure what is and what the perspective is. If you don’t want 2G, you’ll soon be talking about closing measures,” he expects.
