Mort de Richard Tandy, claviériste du groupe Electric Light Orchestra et voix de "Mr. Blue Sky"

Le claviériste du groupe de rock britannique Electric Light Orchestra est mort à l’âge de 76 ans. Il avait notamment contribué aux tubes Evil Woman, Strange Magic, Livin’ Thing ou Mr. Blue Sky.

Richard Tandy, le claviériste du groupe de rock britannique Electric Light Orchestra, est mort à l’âge de 76 ans. Sa disparition a été annoncée par Jeff Lynne, le leader du groupe, dans un message publié sur les réseaux sociaux. “C’est avec une grande tristesse que je vous annonce la mort de mon collaborateur de longue date et cher ami Richard Tandy”, a écrit Jeff Lynne.

“C’était un musicien et un ami remarquable et je chérirai toute la vie des souvenirs que nous avons eus ensemble. J’envoie tout mon amour à Sheila et à la famille Tandy”, a-t-il ajouté.

Aucune cause de décès n’a été précisée, mais, selon le magazine américain Variety, le musicien était malade depuis plusieurs années.

Intronisé au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Né le 26 mars 1948 à Birmingham, Richard Tandy avait rejoint Electric Light Orchestra après la sortie du premier album du groupe en 1972. D’abord bassiste, il est ensuite devenu claviériste après le départ d’un membre de la formation rock britannique.

Grâce aux sons funk, classiques et soul de son synthétiseur, le musicien a contribué aux nombreux succès du groupe tels que Evil Woman, Strange Magic, Livin’ Thing ou Telephone Line. C’est également Richard Tandy que l’on entend répéter “Mr. Blue Sky” dans le célèbre tube éponyme du groupe sorti en 1977.

Au total, Electric Light Orchestra a vendu plus de 50 millions de disques dans le monde entier. Le groupe s’est séparé en 1986 et s’est brièvement reformé en 2001 avec Jeff Lynne et Richard Tandy pour une tournée, raccourcie par manque de succès.

En 2017, Richard Tandy a été intronisé au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame en 2017 en tant que membre d’Electric Light Orchestra aux côtés de Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood et Bev Bevan, cofondateurs du groupe.
