Stevie Mulrooney stole the hearts of the nation as he belted out Ireland’s Call at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday.

And the eight-year-old RTE Late Late Toy Show star delivered another live performance on Monday as he sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to his mother on RTE’s Morning Ireland.

Stevie’s mother hails from Poland and the youngster sang the song in Polish on the radio show.

Speaking in the studio, Stevie recalled what was going through his mind as he prepared to sing Ireland’s Call at the Aviva. He said: “I remember the big crowds that was scaring the life out of me.

“I loved it and when I got into the song, I didn’t feel a little bit nervous.”

Stevie’s father Seamus told how his son singing at the match came about.

He explained: “The first week after the Toy Show, we did a lot of media and got used to a lot of journalists contacting us for interviews.

“It settled down and we had wind that maybe he would be singing. Aoife Clarke, who has been super, from the IRFU…she had asked us if he would do it.

“It wasn’t really decided until Josh van der Flier rang him.

“A funny story on that. I said to Stevie, ‘why do you think the rugby players are ringing you?’

“He says, ‘well either to sing or to replace Keith Earls on the wing.’

“I thought James Lowe might not like that one!”

The performance was hailed by many, including Ireland head coach Andy Farrell, who said after the game: “Oh wow. I tell you, I was actually saying before the game, I was just watching him the whole time.

“I didn’t know whether he was standing with his mother or not but when I realised the other lady (Dalton) was not his mother and was singing the national anthem for the Italians… his confidence was amazing and I actually thought ‘I wish our lads are going to be like that’.

“He’s got his shoulders back, he was ready.

“He was waving to the crowd, stood there on his own. I thought: ‘this kid’s got it all’.

“He was amazing. He nailed it, didn’t he? It was a great start.”
