The population of the Netherlands grew by 31.7 thousand in the first half of 2021. Last year there were 18.2 thousand in the same period. More children were born in the past six months and fewer people emigrated abroad than a year earlier. On balance, almost 29.4 thousand inhabitants were added as a result of foreign migration, and almost 2.4 thousand as a result of natural growth (birth minus death). This is according to preliminary figures from Statistics Netherlands.
The population growth is comparable to that in the first half of 2018, but lower than in peak year 2019. When there were 45.8 thousand inhabitants in the first half of the year. In particular, the number of immigrants was lower than in 2019. Mortality was relatively high in the first half of 2021.
More children born
In the first half of 2021, 86.2 thousand children were born, 4.5 thousand more than in the same period last year. In February, March and April in particular, relatively many children were born compared to previous years. The increase partly compensates for the still high mortality. 83.8 thousand people died in the first half of the year. That was 2.4 thousand less than in the same period last year, but 6.6 thousand more than in 2019. On balance, 2.4 thousand more children were born than people died in the first half of 2021. in 2019 there were still 5.0 thousand. In 2020, natural growth was negative in the first half of the year and 4.6 thousand more people died than children were born.
More immigrants from outside the EU
In the first half of 2021, almost 92.8 thousand immigrants registered with a Dutch municipality. This was 2.1 thousand more than in the first half of 2020, but 20.7 thousand fewer than in the same period in 2019. More people with a migrant background immigrated from outside the EU than in the first half of 2020, when the number immigrants in this group declined the most. Immigration of people with an EU migration background remained virtually unchanged. The number of immigrants from these countries decreased less sharply after the outbreak of the corona pandemic and was relatively high in the preceding months. This was especially true for immigrants with a migrant background in one of the Central and Eastern European countries, including Poland and Bulgaria. The number of immigrants with a Dutch background was lower than in the first half of previous years.
Fewer people emigrated
The number of residents who moved abroad from the Netherlands was smaller than in the first half of 2020. Fewer people emigrated, especially in the first quarter of 2021, and emigration picked up again in the second quarter. In 2020, the number of emigrants decreased after the introduction of the corona measures in March. In the preceding months, the number of emigrants was higher than in previous years. Because fewer people left the Netherlands, on balance more people were added by foreign migration in the first half of the year than in 2020. This balance is comparable to the first half of 2018, but still lower than in peak year 2019.
After the outbreak of the corona pandemic, fewer people with a Dutch background emigrated. Unlike in previous years, as a result, more Dutch people settled on balance than left. In the first half of 2021, the balance was negative again, due to the lower number of immigrants and the increasing number of emigrants.
