Report: Ohio State Eyeing SEC Offensive Coordinator

The Ohio State Buckeyes are aiming to add a new offensive coordinator in 2024.

According to reports from Kentucky Sports Radio, Kentucky offensive coordinator Liam Coen is expected to draw interest from the Buckeyes this offseason.

Coen, who rejoined Mark Stoops’ staff in Lexington after a one-year stay with the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, is also expected to be in the running for the Chicago Bears opening following the firing of Luke Getsy.

A native of Rhode Island, Coen joined the Wildcats in 2021 and transformed the offensive persona with quarterback Will Levis. Kentucky finished 10-3, including securing the 20-17 victory over Iowa in the Citrus Bowl.

As an offense, the Wildcats finished top 50 in every category, including being among the top teams on third-down conversion rates. Last season in his return to Kroger Field, Coen and Kentucky finished 7-6 with a loss to Clemson in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl.

Coen’s offense finished the 2023 season ranked No. 23 in red zone touchdown percentage, No. 40 in yards per play, and No. 51 in points per drive, all significantly higher than in 2022.

After finishing 11-2, the Buckeyes are looking for offensive change. Ohio State recently brought in running back Quinshon Judkins (Ole Miss) and quarterback Will Howard (Kansas State) via the transfer portal. The Buckeyes will also bring back Emeka Egbuka, TreVeyon Henderson, Donovan Jackson and others to help win a conference title.

Coen could end up sticking around in Kentucky or potentially depart for the NFL. He also could end up in Columbus. Day’s factors in what he’s looking for on offense could determine Coen’s status for the 2024 season.
