Emma Stone has vowed to never again tease longtime pal Taylor Swift in public after the actress went viral for jokingly calling the pop star an “a**hole”.

The 35-year-old Oscar winner made the remark in the press room at the 2024 Golden Globes after she was asked about Swift’s enthusiastic reaction to her winning best actress.

At the time, she jokingly replied: “What an a**hole, am I right? I’ve known her for almost 20 years, I was very happy she was there.

“She was also nominated tonight, which was wonderful, and, um, yes, what an a**hole!”

The global superstar was nominated for the best cinematic and box office achievement at the event, thanks to her hit Eras Tour concert film. However, she lost out to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

After the clip went viral, Stone told Variety: “I definitely won’t make a joke like that again.

“I saw headlines that really pulled it out of context.

“What a dope,” she said of herself in the joint cover interview with her Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos.

Stone and Swift have been longtime friends since meeting at the Young Hollywood Awards in the late noughties.

“We just kept in touch ever since and became great friends,” Stone previously said of their friendship.

The Hollywood star is reported to have played matchmaker for Swift with her previous long-term boyfriend, British actor Joe Alwyn, who co-starred with Stone in The Favourite.

The pair’s friendship came back into the spotlight by Swifties last summer following the re-release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) and six previously unheard tracks.

At the time, fans on social media speculated about second vault track, When Emma Falls In Love, and were convinced the song was written about Stone.

Swift did little to quell the speculation, revealing during one of her Eras Tour concerts that the song was about “one of” her “best friends”.

When asked about the song at the Poor Things premiere, Stone, who is married to comedy writer Dave McCary, remained coy and said: “You would have to ask her.”
