Moment road rage driver deliberately mowed down a cyclist in hit-and-run and left him lying injured in the road after he caught him using his mobile phone at the wheel

Driver appeared to deliberately mow down cyclist who caught him on his phone Video shows the motorist swerving into the cyclist down a dark, narrow road The cyclist, Don Codman, said the driver shouted 'I'm going to f***ing have you' Moments earlier, he knocked on driver's window to tell him to get off his phone

This is the moment a road rage driver appeared to deliberately mow down a cyclist who earlier caught him on his mobile phone at the wheel.

Don Codman, 54, was cycling to a doctors appointment about 5pm on Tuesday when he stopped alongside the dark blue hatchback in Poole, Dorset, and spotted the driver on his phone.

He banged on the car window and told him to put it down before peddling off.

The irate motorist shouted at Mr Codman ‘I’m going to f***ing have you’ out of his window before following him into a nearby side road.

The car then rammed into the back of Mr Codman’s bike, throwing him to the ground.

The motorist immediately sped away from the scene, leaving sheet metal worker Mr Codman lying injured in the road.

A witness called the police and footage from a camera on a house opposite caught the moment Mr Codman was hit.

After the incident the father-of-two went to hospital to have injuries to his legs, elbows and shoulder examined.

Mr Codman, who was wearing a high-viz jacket and had lights on his bike at the time, said: ‘The driver flew off the handle, he was clearly using his car as a weapon.’

Earlier, he saw the motorist ‘blatantly on his phone while driving and paying no attention to the road.’

He said after passing the same driver still on his phone for a second time, he felt compelled to say something.

Mr Codman was concerned he or another cyclist’s life could be put in danger if the motorist was distracted at the wheel.

He said he ‘calmly knocked on the car window and told him to put that phone down’.

‘Then I cycled off thinking there would be nothing more to it.

‘He followed me down Northmere Road and I could hear him shouting. He was saying ”I’ll f***ing have you”. I just thought ”I’ve got to get out of here”.

‘A witness said he was beeping his horn at me but it’s all a bit of a blur when I think back to it.

‘He pulled ahead of me on the road and stopped, I think he was going to get out and confront me.

‘I just kept cycling because I knew he was going to be violent. When I rounded the corner into Sancreed Road he rammed into my back wheel.’

Immediately after the crash, the motorist sped away from the scene. Police are now investigating

Mr Codman immediately picked himself up after the incident but admitted he was immediately in ‘a lot of pain’.

‘It’s not going to stop me from cycling to work. Everyone knows that there are dangerous drivers out there and they need to be caught.’

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: ‘We received a report at around 5.20pm on Tuesday 22 November 2022 of a collision involving a dark blue hatchback car and a cyclist in the area of Sancreed Road in Poole.

‘It was reported that the car failed to stop at the scene of the collision. The cyclist sustained injuries that were not believed to be serious.

‘Enquiries into the incident are ongoing. No arrests have been made at this time.’

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident.
