Longtime Major League Baseball infielder Jed Lowrie announced his retirement on Thursday after playing 14 seasons in the majors, primarily with the Oakland Athletics.

He earned an All-Star nomination in 2018 as a member of that franchise.

“We always outperformed what our payroll was and exceeded expectations, and I was always drawn to that, and that’s why I always ended up going back,” Lowrie said of the A’s, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

“The fact that I wound up playing for the A’s for seven years is amazing,” Lowrie said. “The organization always allowed me the freedom to be myself, and playing for Bob Melvin, he always did such a good job of knowing when to say the right things and when not to say anything.”

Lowrie started his career in 2008 with the Boston Red Sox, before joining the Houston Astros in 2012.

He had three stints with the Athletics, starting in 2013, 2016, and 2021, respectively.

He also played with the Astros twice and the New York Mets once. But it was the A’s that always stayed close to his heart. But Lowrie is content to call it a career

“There’s a lot I’ve missed, doing this all of their lives,” he said. “And nobody gets to play forever, right? I’ve just gotten to the point where I listen to my body, and when I think about playing another 162, I don’t want to do that.”
