A fallen tree closed a road in Nottingham city centre

Motorists faced disruption on roads across the East Midlands after heavy winds battered the region.

A yellow weather warning was issued by the Met Office on Monday morning, and emergency services urged people to travel with caution.

Numerous reports of fallen trees blocking roads have been made, while flailing debris damaged houses and vehicles in Nottinghamshire.

Winds were set to reach speeds of 46mph in Leicestershire, said the Met Office.

Tree surgeons were called to remove the tree in Mount Street

In Nottingham city centre, a large eucalyptus tree fell at about 07:30 BST, forcing police to close Park Row, near to the Playhouse theatre.

Debris including bricks from neighbouring properties could be seen in the road, while a tractor arrived to help remove the blockage.

Reports of traffic disruption were also made in West Bridgford after trees came down in Malvern Road, Melton Road, Gordon Road and Trevor Road.

In Wenlock Drive, pictures showed a residential car park strewn with tiles and masonry from damaged buildings.

Fallen trees were also reported in Keyworth, Wilsthorpe Road in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, as well as in Rycroft Road in Hemington, near Castle Donington, Leicestershire.

The yellow weather warning was set to be in place until 22:00 today.
