Govt launches ‘SWAYAM Plus Platform’ to boost employability and professional development
NEW DELHI: The centre on Tuesday launched “SWAYAM Plus Platform” in collaboration with leading industry players to bring employability and professional development-focused programmes to its learners. This is an expansion of the SWAYAM to identify and include courses aligned with industry needs and that enhance learners’ employability.
SWAYAM is the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform providing educational opportunities by bringing the best teaching and learning resources to everyone. The enrolment data over the years from 2017 to 2023 has shown significant increase — from 31 lakhs to more than 72 lakhs. Currently, has one crore registrations, with four crore total enrolment and has certified more than 25 lakh learners. The credits for these free of cost courses are accepted by 297 universities.
Union minister of education and skill development entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan, launched the platform today in New Delhi. MoUs were exchanged with SWAYAM and industry partners including L&T EduTech, Tata Consultancy Services Limited, among others for launching industry courses on SWAYAM Plus.
Pradhan said for implementation of NEP2020 in letter and spirit, an entire new generation must be prepared, while emphasizing that female enrolment in STEM education in India has become the highest in the world.
Pradhan added that working professionals to participate in the SWAYAM platform using it as a vehicle and take advantage of the multiple-entry-multiple-exit of NEP2020, and that “the platform will widen the scope of the classroom adding 43 million students of Higher Education students and working professionals.”
The courses to be offered are to be in local languages as well to empower every student in order to realize the dream of Viksit Bharat, as innovation has no language, said Pradhan.
Developed in collaboration with industry giants like L&T, Microsoft, and CISCO, among others, SWAYAM Plus features innovative elements such as multilingual content, AI-enabled guidance, credit recognition, and pathways to employment.
It primarily focuses on building an ecosystem for all stakeholders in professional and career development, including learners, course providers, industry, academia, and strategic partners; enabling a mechanism that provides credit recognition for high-quality certifications and courses offered by the best industry and academia partners; reaching a large learner base by catering to learning across the country, with a focus on reaching learners from tier 2 and 3 towns and rural areas and Offering employment focused courses, based on learner needs – across chosen disciplines with options to learn through resources in vernacular languages.
