Jadon Sancho says he cannot wait to play football ‘with a smile on his face’ again after leaving Manchester United to rejoin Borussia Dortmund on loan.

The 23-year-old returns to the German giants on loan until the end of the 2023-24 season, ending a miserable campaign in Manchester having been banished from the first-team by Erik ten Hag in September.

Sancho has not trained with the United squad since then, exiled after refusing to apologise to his manager for publicly challenging the Dutchman’s concerns over his efforts on the training pitch.

Having left Dortmund in a £72million deal in 2021, he now returns to the Westfalenstadion, appearing to send a parting shot at United after ‘returning home’ on Thursday.

‘When I came into the dressing room today, it felt like “coming home”. I know the club inside and out, I’ve always been very close with the fans here, and I’ve never lost contact with those in charge,’ Sancho said.

‘I can’t wait to see my teammates again, go out on the pitch, play football with a smile on my face, provide goals, score goals and help qualify for the Champions League.’

Sancho joined Dortmund from Manchester City in 2017, scoring 50 goals and providing 64 assists for the club before joining United.

‘Jadon is an absolute difference maker and I’m looking forward to seeing him back in black and yellow soon,’ Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Khel said.

‘He knows this city, Singal Iduna Park, our fans and our club.

‘Even though he hasn’t played any competitive games in the past few months, we are sure that he will quickly settle back in with us, get into top form and use his qualities to help us achieve our goals for the season.’

Sancho has managed just 76 minutes of first-team football this season, appearing off the bench in United’s first three games of the season before his exile.

During this two-and-a-half years in Manchester, the England international has managed just 12 goals and six assists, a tally he bettered in his last season at Dortmund alone.

His loan move does not contain an option to buy. Dortmund are understood to have paid a £3million fee for the six-month deal with an additional £3.4m in add-ons, subject to appearances and Champions League progress and qualification.
