Australia’s best supermarket for 2023 revealed

Aldi has been crowned Supermarket of the Year for 2023 in one of the country’s leading customer satisfaction awards.

Market research group Roy Morgan named the grocery chain as the top supermarket for 2023 in their annual Customer Satisfaction Awards, beating other companies like Coles and Woolworths for the top spot.

It’s the fourth consecutive year Aldi has received the award and the seventh time overall.

Roy Morgan’s research found Aldi’s average customer satisfaction score was 95.7 per cent based on face-to-face customer interactions at supermarkets.

It said Aldi delivered $3.4bn in savings to Australians over 2023.

Aldi Australia group director Simon Padovani-Ginies said the award was a reflection of their “ongoing commitment” to shoppers.

“Award wins such as these are achieved through the efforts of our great team and supply partners,” he said.

“At a time when shoppers are continuously seeking better value, we have never been more aware of the need to continue to deliver on our promise to offer Aussies the highest quality products at the lowest possible prices.”

Mr Padovani-Ginies reiterated that the company was proud to deliver “real money back into the pockets of Australians” during the cost-of-living crisis.

Roy Morgan annually tracks customer satisfaction, trust and distrust, engagement and loyalty through its annual face-to-face survey, interviewing more than 60,000 Aussies.

The company’s Customer Satisfaction Awards represent more than 280 of Australia’s most well-known companies.

Among the 38 winners, P & N Bank was crowned Bank of the Year, while Commonwealth Bank snatched up the award for Major Bank of the Year.

Supercheap Auto was named Auto store of the Year, Muffin Break claimed Coffee Shop of the Year and Myer was named Department Store of the Year.

Twenty-two winners are repeat winners backing up their victories from a year ago – including RAC, Muffin Break, Myer, Suzanne Grae, The Reject Shop, JB Hi-Fi, Bunnings Warehouse, Chemist Warehouse, Subway, Aldi, Dan Murphy’s, Skechers and Rebel.

More than 60,000 Australians surveyed from January to December 2023 named the companies they dealt with across more than 30 industries, including automotive, banking, supermarket and telecommunications, and rated how satisfied they were with them.

“Monthly customer satisfaction winners are recorded in each category throughout the year, with the annual award going to the company with the most monthly wins,” Roy Morgan said in a statement.

The awards come amid households continuing to feel the cost-of-living squeeze through rising grocery costs and bills.

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has revealed food prices rose 8 per cent, travel and accommodation rose 25 per cent and household electricity bills rose 15.5 per cent over the last year.

Consumer prices rose 3.4 per cent in January from a year earlier but unchanged from their reading in December.
