‘Mijn betover grootoom was een groot strijder’

Zuidooststaat beeldend kunstenaar Remy Jungerman (Moengo, Suriname, 1959) voor de maquette van zijn tentoonstelling at the zijnbescheiden atelier in Amsterdam Behind the forest.. Piepkleine versies van zijn zeefdrukken, sculpturen, collages en installaties zijn geplaatst in een miniatuurversie van de tentoonstellingsruimte in het Stedelijk Museum. De beelden maken deel uit van een groot overzicht van meer dan vijftien jaarwerk.

Het Stedelijk Museum prijst de’autonome beeldtaal’van de moderne, veelal geometrisch-abstracte objecten van Jungerman. Director Rein Wolfs noemt het overzicht van zijn werk een vervolg op de tentoon stelling De Surinaamse School, Een overzicht van Surinaamse kunst van 1910 tot de jarentachtig.

Aan de vooravond van de open van zijn tentoonstelling, zit de kunstenaar met een kop thee en een schaaltje baklava op tafel in zijn atelier vlakbij metrohalte Kraaiennest. Op straat wordt een mark tafge broken. Grote bakken met kousenband en de bittere groente sopropo worden op elkaar gestapeld en in een wit bestelbusje geschoven, waaruit Afro-Surinaamse bigi-poku muziekknalt. Binnen valt de stilte in de werkruimte en de rust waarmee Jungerman vertel top.

“Iksie het proces in het atelier als een ritueel, zeker als ik grijp naar materialen of kleurelementen die verwijzen naar Winti”, vertelt Jungerman.  I turned at jeeentje and met hetmateriaal with constant communication. Marron

De titel Behind the forest is een afgeleidde van de Bakabusi – vrij vertaald als’volk achter het bos’, de naam van de groep Marrons waarmee Jungerman verbonden is via zijn moeder. Marrons zijn nazaten van ontsnapte totslaafgemaakten, ze leven in het regenwoud van Suriname en zijn sterk met de tradities van West-Afrikaanse religies verbond engebleven.

 opgroeien met Marron-moeder betekende dat we altijd rituelenhadden. Als kind nam ikkruidenbaden.・ I had Te Macken. De hele familie is zo grootgebracht en ondanks de Europese roots van mijn vader – mijn overgrootvader vertrok van Friesland naar Suriname – ging mijn vader da arinmee. ”

The culture of Suriname, Nederland en de Verenigde Staten, waar Jungerman deels werkzaam is zijn bepalend voor zijnwerk.  ik ben dankbaar voor de kunstopleiding die ik heb gevolgd bij de Academie in Paramaribo, voor ik in 1990 naar Amsterdam verhuisde voor de Rietveld. ruimte om te zoeken naar een bredere invulling van de zogenaamde westerse modernekunst. Je hoort altijd maar een deel van hetverhaal.
