Mets honor slain NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller on Opening Day

The New York Mets honored slain NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller with an emotional moment of silence before the team’s home opener on Friday.

Mets and Brewers players stood on the baselines awaiting the national anthem at Citi Field in Queens as the Amazin’s flashed Diller’s name and face on the jumbotron in center field to honor the fallen Finest “for his bravery and making the ultimate sacrifice to keep our city safe,” the stadium announcer said.

The touching tribute comes on the second day of Diller’s wake services in Long Island after the 31-year-old father of one was fatally shot during a traffic stop in the Far Rockaway section of Queens on Monday.

The NYPD thanked the Mets for showing their support.

“We extend our gratitude to the @Mets for their tribute & support for our fallen officer, Jonathan Diller & his family, at today’s #OpeningDay ceremony at @CitiField,” NYPD tweeted.

“As New York City continues to honor our hero, we wish the Mets a great 2024 season,” the department added.

The Mets, whose original home opener on Thursday was postponed due to rain, would go on to lose the game 3-1.

Diller was on patrol Monday when he was allegedly shot in the stomach by career criminal Guy Rivera, 34, after he and his partner approved Rivera’s vehicle, which was parked in front of a bus stop.

Rivera, who was wounded by a gunshot in the exchange, was charged with murder and gun possession on Thursday, officials said. He is being held without bail.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul attended, then quickly left, Diller’s wake in Massapequa, Long Island, on Friday following a tense confrontation with a mourner.

Former President Donald Trump paid his respects to the fallen officer on Thursday, while President Biden and former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama rubbed elbows with celebrities at a lavish fundraiser that shut down Midtown Manhattan.
