MEGHAN MCCAIN: Alec Baldwin and ABC News should have known better than to air a pointless, tasteless 'exclusive' interview, while the family of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins still grieves

I, like everyone else, have been horrified by the accidental shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins by actor Alec Baldwin on the set of the movie ‘Rust’ ever since I heard the news in October.

When I saw the trailer for Alec’s first one-on-one interview with ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos, I had the same reaction that CNN journalist Andrew Kaczynski had.

He tweeted ‘I know it’s TV, an industry in which I work, but I find something unseemly about this big promo/hoopla with graphics and dramatic sounds to talk about a woman’s tragic death’.

The dramatic trailer showcased itself more like a teaser for an upcoming fictional television show than of a famous actor’s first sitdown amid a still-pending investigation into the tragic death of an innocent woman.

It read tonally distasteful and a bit confusing.

Last night, I sat down to watch the entire interview between George and Alec and not much of my opinion has changed.

From the descriptions in the interviews alone, there were many, many checks and balances that were not followed when Alec’s .45-caliber Colt revolver fatally shot Halyna Hutchins.

I will save you the time of watching the hour-long interview and tell you that George and Alec go around in circles talking about all the possible ways these checks and balances were ignored.

They go into great detail about the movie set’s armorer, the different complaints on the set, and the protocols Alec did (and did not) follow before NOT firing off the gun.

Yes, you read that right.

He claims he never pulled the trigger to fire off the gun but instead ‘released the hammer’ after admitting to not checking the chamber for bullets inside.

This is something Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza disputes as he told Fox News, ‘Guns don’t just go off. So whatever needs to happen to manipulate the firearm, he did that, and it was in his hands.’

I’m from Arizona, I have been around guns and shooting them my entire life. The first rule of any use of any guns of any kind is to never point a gun at anything you don’t intend to shoot or kill. Period. End of story, no matter the situation.

I have only shot a Colt .45 revolver a few times in my life, but I do know when you pull a hammer back on a revolver or any pistol, it is with the intention to pull the trigger and release the hammer.

So one way or the other, Alec was aiming to shoot.

This is something Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza disputes as he told Fox News, 'Guns don't just go off. So whatever needs to happen to manipulate the firearm, he did that, and it was in his hands.'

I feel bad for Alec Baldwin. He seemed manic and anxious -- giving confusing answers to simple questions and insisting he didn't want to come off like a victim. But he spent most of the time talking about his life instead of focusing on the victim, Halyna Hutchins or giving any opinion whatsoever on what he believes should be done differently to make sure nothing like this ever happens again on any movie set

What is painfully obvious in this interview is neither Alec Baldwin nor George Stephanopoulos know anything about shooting guns in real life.

I have often thought that there should be a gun beat in newsrooms, the way there is for any number of other specialist subjects.

It is always so clear that the vast majority of people speaking on gun issues know absolutely nothing about the Second Amendment or guns in America, let alone have respect for those of us that do and handle firearms safely.

I feel bad for Alec Baldwin. He seemed manic and anxious — giving confusing answers to simple questions and insisting he didn’t want to come off like a victim.

But he spent most of the time talking about his life instead of focusing on the victim, Halyna Hutchins or giving any opinion whatsoever on what he believes should be done differently to make sure nothing like this ever happens again on any movie set.

There was also — bizarrely — time spent over grievances towards former President Trump and actor George Clooney, which came off particularly petty and tasteless, especially because the main focus of any of this should be the woman who lost her life.

I left watching this interview wondering what lawyer or crisis communications person thought this interview would be a good idea for Alec Baldwin.

He is clearly too emotionally distraught and angry to be in front of a camera giving interviews.

From a legal standpoint, he could still be held legally culpable for the death of Halyna Hutchins even though it appears to have been an accident, albeit one caused by negligence by somebody.

There are two crew members suing and I would make the assumption that at some point Halyna’s family will sue as well.

None of this puts Alec Baldwin in any kind of position of looking good or innocent.

From a political standpoint, both Alec Baldwin and George Stephanopoulos are figureheads of the left-wing media and Democratic party elites.

Discussions of guns and gun culture in America on national television, in such a delicate situation where a woman senselessly and tragically lost her life, should be done by someone who respects guns and the level of safety needed to responsibly use them in any context or situation.

Ultimately, watching the interview made me uncomfortable, a woman lost her life a little over a month ago, and there is still an active investigation into how and why this could possibly happen and Halyna Hutchins’ family is still grieving.

I would say ABC should know better and do better, but that would have had to have started with Alec understanding respectful boundaries, something we all know he has never been good at.

I hope Halyna’s family can find peace as I can only speculate that they are in unfathomable mourning and pain and I hope that they aren’t subjected to any more cheap and pointless interviews that only open more wounds and make them relive the horror of her death .
