Ready to book your summer holiday? If you’re thinking of travelling to Lanzarote, you might want to up your savings.

That’s because the cost of a hotel room in the much loved Canary Island has soared in price, so you’re break might be more expensive than planned.

New figures have revealed a 15.5% increase in hotel prices from November 2022- when you could book a room for £94 per night – to a whopping £109 in 2023.

This means that costs have have skyrocketed in the past ten years, as the average in 2013 was a much more affordable £52.

In 2023, the most affordable months of the year to book a room were off-season during May and June, when prices averaged between £101 and £104.

Likewise, June actually saw the narrowest price increase compared with 2022, of just 2.4%.

Prices are so steep, that last month representatives from TUI, Jet2 and Ryanair urged hospitality industry bosses in Lanzarote, as well as those in Tenerife and Fuerteventura, to ‘exercise restraint’, asking they take into account the economic challenges faced by tourists from the UK and Germany – the islands’ two biggest markets for tourism.

However, employers defended the costs, saying it was all a part of supply and demand.

As we head into the peak time for holiday bookings, it’s likely that many Brits will flock to Lanzarote in 2024. The tourism industry brought €2.5 billion to the island during the first three quarters of 2023, and in June 2023 the British made up over half of the tourists at 125,808 or 52.12%.

What day to book: Sunday – this could save you up to 23%.

How far ahead to book: Five months for domestic flights – this could save you up to 35%. For international travel, book flights eight to 23 days before, and avoid 36 to 63 days before, as prices tend to spike here.

What day to start your trip: Friday is the cheapest day to begin your holiday, saving up to 26%, while Sunday is typically most expensive.

Least likely flight time to be cancelled: If you depart before 3pm, the chances are lower.

And it’s not just the cost of booking a hotel that’s increased. Other European hotspots have also been hit by price hikes on flights, which saw with the most dramatic seen for return flights from the UK to Menorca, where prices have shot up from averages of £178 in 2020 to £291 now.

According to findings by The Mirror, alongside price comparison website Hopper, trips to Barcelona have also been hit, increasing by approximately 30% from £143 to £187.

These destinations aren’t anomalies: Spain on the whole has experienced the hit, with the likes of Malaga rising by 28% from £129 to £246. And, an infamous party town, Ibiza has increased by 17% from £182 to £213.

So, when it comes to booking your summer getaway, you might want to see if you can snap up a deal – or get the piggy bank out.
