Morrisons is rolling out a new feature across its stores nationwide

Morrisons is rolling out new children’s trolleys and checkouts across more of its stores after a successful trial.

The mini child-sized trolleys look like the supermarket chain’s regular sized ones and have a long pole with a white plastic flag on it to help you keep an eye on your little ones while shopping. The child checkouts are supervised by a Morrisons member of staff and children are shown how to scan their shopping. Morrisons launched the trial a few weeks ago across a few stores but has now confirmed that it would be rolling it out nationwide.

A Morrisons spokesperson said the fun scheme aimed to help children join in with the shopping experience. The spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we are introducing Child Friendly checkouts into our stores. We want customers of all ages to enjoy shopping at Morrisons and know our younger shoppers are often keen to help out at the tills so we welcome them to have a go next time they’re in our stores.”

One of the stores participating in the trial was the supermarket chain’s Shrewsbury stores. The store announced the scheme on its Community Champions page, the post read: “We will be introducing our new kids checkout where your children can be supervised by one of our amazing colleagues, to scan all the parents/guardians shopping through the till, if this is something you would like your little ones to take part in and it is unmanned please ask a member of the checkouts team, they will be happy to help.”

Parents seemed to love the idea with one parent sharing that their children always seem to get bored when they are paying. They commented: “It’s at this point where the kids get bored – so why not give them something to look forward to and they will be doing something they may feel useful at. At least they’re not just being given an ipad and then kicking off when the battery has ran out”

Another parent said the idea was a “great incentive for good behaviour” adding: “Tell the kids if they are good while shopping then they can use the till and put it through.”

A third commented: “One mum responded: “I love this idea. Not only does it give a child something to do, it helps develop their independence, thinking skills and understanding. My son is 3 now we let him scan our shopping, bus passes and others he loves it and feels proud of himself it’s just like the shopping trolleys in lidl he gets one and does our shopping with us.”

Another said: “Someone else pointed out: “Seems many adults forget they were children once and they also played with toy checkouts. They would have been buzzing their little heads off if they had this opportunity to use a real till, as I know I would.”
