Serious consequences for sponsored students caught doing immoral activities, says Mara chairman

PETALING JAYA: Students sponsored by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) will face stern consequences if caught in immoral activities, says chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

He said in a Facebook post on Thursday (Nov 23) that engaging in immoral activities would not only hurt their own interests but also Mara’s image.

“Mara-sponsored students abroad are always reminded not to engage in any immoral activities that violate the interests of both students and Mara.

“Any violation can and will be subject to very strict action,” he said.

Dr Asryaf’s warning comes after PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari raised concerns over a supposed “afterparty” for students who had participated in the annual Nottingham Malaysian Games in the United Kingdom in a Facebook post on Nov 22.

According to pictures shared by Ahmad, the party had seemingly been planned by the Nottingham Malaysia Society (NMS) itself and was to be held at a local nightclub.

It was also advertised as only for those aged 18 and over which allegedly drew anxiety from both Malaysian students, parents and even society members.

Ahmad then called on the Higher Education Ministry to take immediate action to ensure the cancellation of the party by NMS.

“I also urge all scholarship providers such as Mara, JPA, PETRONAS and others to monitor the activities of Malaysian students under their sponsorship,” he added.
