Mason Mount and Cristiano Ronaldo surge into the top 10 but Reece James plummets after missing Watford win - Our Premier League POWER RANKINGS after midweek goal-fest

Sportsmail brings you the top 10 hottest Premier League players each weekLiverpool put Merseyside rivals Everton to the sword, led by Mohamed SalahCristiano Ronaldo's clinical brace helped Manchester United knock off ArsenalChelsea had to dig deep at Watford, and they did it without Reece James playing Who tops our Power Rankings this week, and who has earned a spot on the list?

Another week and and another damning indictment of where Everton are right now under Rafa Benitez.

Fans unleashed hell at club officials in the stands and many flooded to the exits in the first half in what transpired to be a thumping Merseyside derby defeat by a Liverpool side led by Mohamed Salah.

Salah laughed off his seventh-placed finish in the Ballon d’Or voting to net twice and keep Liverpool within touching distance of Man City, one point ahead, and Chelsea, two points ahead.

Unlike Liverpool, City and Chelsea were made to work hard for their latest league wins.

Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa gave City a fright at Villa Park when Ollie Watkins reduced the deficit to 2-1 early in the second half.

But Pep Guardiola’s side showed they have the grit to go with the flair to inflict a first defeat at Villa for Gerrard.

For Chelsea, Thomas Tuchel was left unimpressed with his side after they scraped a 2-1 win at Watford.

Elsewhere, Newcastle’s search for their first league win of the season goes on after a late strike from Teemu Pukki salvaged a draw for Norwich.

Raphinha grabbed victory for Leeds with the last kick of the game against Crystal Palace while Neal Maupay got an 89th minute equaliser for Brighton as they drew 1-1 at West Ham.

Tottenham made light work of Brentford – even without the goalscoring help of Harry Kane – as they cruised to a 2-0 win.

Wolves were held to a stalemate against Burnley while Leicester and Southampton played out a four-goal thriller down at St Mary’s.

Every week, Sportsmail will be bringing you a Power Rankings table, listing the top 10 players in the Premier League after each round of action is completed.

As the season continues to unwind, the rankings will provide a form guide with players moving in and out of the top 10 depending on both their performances in the previous fixture and also in recent weeks.

So, with all of that taken into account, how have Sportsmail’s latest batch of Power Rankings taken shape?

10. Reece James (Chelsea, down six)

This is pure misfortune rather than anything else but the best ability is availability and a drop in the rankings was inevitable once he missed the midweek win at Watford.

Tuchel had to do without his star wing-back due to an ankle injury but news he will be fit to take on West Ham arrives as a major boost.

James has been one of the league’s best players this season and Chelsea do suffer going forward when he misses out and Cesar Azpilicueta slots in.

Tuchel hailed James as a ‘specialist’ this week and it was no surprise to see Chelsea neutered more than they usually are with him out the side.

Watford’s benefit will be West Ham’s misery as he returns – and he can get back to climbing these rankings!

9. Mason Mount (Chelsea, new entry)

Over to one of James’ team-mates and the first of this week’s new entries: Mason Mount.

The 22-year-old’s goal and assist for Hakim Ziyech’s winner was crucial in bailing Chelsea out on a night there were far from their best.

Mount would say himself that this has been something of a stop-start season for him but his display at Watford was a major step forward in getting back on track.

Danny Murphy, analysing Mount’s display at Vicarage Road for Match of the Day, was effusive in his praise.

‘Mount never does [disappoint]. He’s got that quality and that desire to keep getting into dangerous areas,’ Murphy said.

‘They’ve got lots of quality players but it was great to see him back. You know what you get from him. You get a great touch, great technique and that willingness to get into areas. He’s always a threat.’

Without Mount’s efforts this week Chelsea would have been kicked off the top of the table. A clutch performance.

8. Bernardo Silva (Man City, new entry)

Guardiola described him as the best player in the Premier League right now and who are we to argue with the City boss?

Plus, the Portuguese playmaker produced one of the goals of the season at Aston Villa to give City the two-goal cushion they needed, given that Watkins goal soon after half-time.

It would be a stretch to say Silva is underrated – he won City’s Player of the Season award in 2018-19 – but so much of the problem solving he does on the fly to keep City ticking can often go unnoticed.

He’s no fuss. He can play out wide, in a deeper midfield role, a No 10, a false nine, he can do it all and there appears little ego in him.

For his goal alone, which will be in serious goal of the season contention, welcome back to the power rankings, Bernardo.

7. Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal, down one)

He conceded three goals. He lost.

Yes, we know, but Ramsdale made seven key saves and kept Arsenal in the game just when it appeared to be slipping away from them.

Ramsdale certainly has areas of his game he can work on – communication being one after mixed messages with Thomas Partey proved costly at Old Trafford – but his ascendancy is undeniable.

Six clean sheets in 10 games for Arsenal prior to the United defeat is testament to how Ramsdale has elevated to solidify himself as Arsenal’s undisputed No 1.

He will expect to add to that total in the coming games.

Little he could do with any of the strikes. Bruno Fernandes and Ronaldo, for his first, finding themselves unmarked five to six yards out was an early Christmas gift from the defenders.

6. Emile Smith Rowe (Arsenal, down one)

He won’t score a more bizarre goal than the one that broke the deadlock at Old Trafford, that’s for sure.

Smith Rowe’s goal, which was a brilliant volley overshadowed by the fact that David de Gea was writhing around oblivious on the floor in the United goal, saw him become the second youngest goal scorer for Arsenal in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

Aged 21 years and 127 days old, Smith Rowe came in at No 2 after Nicolas Anelka, who netted in February 1999 aged 19 years and 340 days old.

Smith Rowe plays with a freedom and a belief that suggests he can be a go-to man in big games for Mikel Arteta’s side.

While Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had an off night it was Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard that really took the fight to United before a certain Portuguese took the game by the scruff of the neck.

5. Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United, new entry)

Speaking of that Portuguese, how many episodes are we on now for The Cristiano Ronaldo show?

All eyes were on Ronaldo: back in the side, new boss Ralf Rangnick – who many feel has a system that doesn’t cater for a 36-year-old striker – in the stands, United in 10th and their season in disarray. He had to deliver. And he did – twice.

To become the first player in football history to surpass 800 career goals, finishing with 801 on the night, is a phenomenal achievement and once again he came to United’s rescue.

Remember too that Ronaldo is the all-time top scorer in men’s international football, in the Champions League and for Real Madrid. He’s a freak of nature.

His composure on the penalty showed just where Ronaldo’s mind is at right now – he certainly isn’t worried about being cast aside by Rangnick.

4. James Maddison (Leicester City, up three)

Earlier this season the jury was completely out on James Maddison. Was he ever going to fulfil his undoubted potential?

He was being overlooked by England, was in and out of the Leicester team and much of Brendan Rodgers’ press conferences involved fielding questions around the playmaker.

That has all since quietened down and Maddison is edging ever closer to his best.

Maddison’s upturn in form saw him score for a third successive game and it was crucial in securing a point on the road against Southampton.

Self-confidence was crippling Maddison before this run but a marathon of watching his best clips on film helped light the fire inside him and his St Mary’s strike was his fourth goal in his last six starts.

Keep playing like this and Gareth Southgate may have to find room on that plane to Qatar next year.

3. Joao Cancelo (Man City, non mover)

To the surprise of no-one, Joao Cancelo is one of the frontrunner’s to be crowned Premier League Player of the Month for November.

One of the biggest compliments that can be paid to the former Juventus defender is that he is raising the expectations of what can be expected from a player in his role.

He also plays with such a grace and an acceleration that makes life hellish for those forced to mark him.

There was no clean sheet or assist to shout about in the win at Villa but Cancelo is a crucial piece to Guardiola’s puzzle and has elevated himself to one of the most valuable assets that would walk into any side in the league.

2. Diogo Jota (Liverpool, non mover)

We can assure you that there is no intended Portuguese bias for this list – it’s a pure coincidence!

But we were loathed to punish Diogo Jota after another impressive display in the Merseyside derby.

Some eyebrows were raised when Liverpool spent £41million to get him out of Wolves but he has elevated his game under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp.

His goal at Everton means he has netted four goals in his last three games.

It may have gone under the radar but only team-mate Mo Salah and Leicester striker Jamie Vardy have scored more goals than Jota in the Premier League this season.

A revelation that is going from strength to strength on Merseyside.

Congratulations, Dio-goal. We’ll show ourselves out…

1. Mo Salah (Liverpool, non mover)

What words are left to capture the greatness of Salah?

Almost all superlatives have been exhausted, such is his consistency and it is why he is far and away the No 1 player in the league right now.

At the pace Salah is going – having netted twice against Everton in midweek – he needs just one more goal to become the third-fastest player in Liverpool history to hit the 20-goal total in a season.

Ian Rush in 1986 is second on that list with the late, and great, Roger Hunt racing to 20 goals fastest in 1961.

He is the league-leading scorer and is also top of the assists chart with eight, ahead of team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Right now opposition teams have no answer and in this sort of form Liverpool can have every belief they can win the title.

Just give the man his money and secure him on a long-term deal!
