He’s the hero that none of us realised we needed. The money saving expert has been fighting our corner and helping us cut costs for almost two decades.

Whether it be on TV, radio, online or in the newspapers, Martin has been giving us invaluable advice and leading the charge against those trying to rip us off. And now more than ever we are all in need of his help and advice as the cost of living soars.

Martin has been behind some incredibly successful campaigns over the years, taking on unfair bank charges, uncapped energy bills and student finance. After a staggering 17 years on breakfast TV, Martin announced he was standing down from his regular Good Morning Britain segment in July last year.

“My time is running out, this is actually my last ever Deals Of The Week,” he said. “Because of my new show coming on every week in September, I am not going to do them any more,” he said.

While the MoneySavingExpert.com founder is always talking about great deals and tips, he rarely discusses his family life, Mirror Online reports.

He was rocked by a devastatingly cruel tragedy and at an early age that has left him scarred until this day. Martin’s wife is actually a bit of a celebrity in her own right as a BBC presenter- and hit the headlines last week after being left shaken by a horrifying mugging.

They have a daughter who is already proving to be a chip off the old block at the age of just seven.

Here is a look at his life off-screen:

Famous wife

Martin isn’t the only famous face in his family, as his wife is television presenter Lara Lewington. The couple have been happily married since 2009 and share a daughter together.

In the early days of their relationship, Martin and Lara would hire a motorbike on holiday and sing songs in the sun. But after becoming parents, Lara banned Martin from getting on a motorbike anymore.

Having spent six years at Channel Five as a weather presenter and showbiz correspondent, Lara featured in a weekly sketch on ITV1’s The Impressionable Jon Culshaw.

She was a panellist on ITV1’s Win, Lose or Draw and has made appearance on Newsnight, Big Brother’s Big Mouth, The Weakest Link and BBC’s Let’s Dance for Sports Relief.

Lara currently co-presents BBC’s Click, a popular weekly technology news show, with Spencer Kelly and is a Women’s magazine columnist.

Last September, Lara was in a state of terror when she was mugged in the street by a motorcyclist who swerved at speed before snatching her smartphone from her hand. Lara was “gutted” to lose so many family photos but she was relieved she was not hurt and her daughter wasn’t there to witness the horror.

“Last night whilst out walking, a motorcycle swerved at speed, and the pillion rider grabbed my phone out of my hand,” explained Lara.

“As I felt someone behind me, for a split second I’d thought it was an accident happening and hoped the person was okay, then by the time I could turn around my phone was gone – with terrifying pace and accuracy.

“So focused on mask and hand sanitising these days, I guess I’d forgotten to be so vigilant about this. Obviously I was immediately grateful not to be hurt, and that my daughter wasn’t there to witness it – just a bit gutted I’d lost so many photos after a series of inexplicable backup fails.”

Martin alerted the police and miraculously her phone was picked up by a kind cyclist who found it after it was dumped by the thieves. While the screen was shattered, Lara was pleased to be reunited with her phone as it has her family photos on it.

She elaborated: “After my husband called the police (whilst I mentally figured out the frustrating and time consuming admin I’d need to do), shockingly via a call ‘home’ he got a message from a kind cyclist who had found the phone minutes later (thieves had dumped it) – and despite how damaged it was, and the coronavirus risk, had picked it up and tried to find its owner.

“Despite some initial weariness, we explained, to his shock, what had happened and asked if he’d meet us in a busy place. He was happy to.

“We jumped in a black cab to get there, told Junior the cabbie the story (he was outraged, and kindly decided to wait with us whilst we checked this wasn’t part two of the scam). But when we got there, Sam the cyclist, was an honest nice man, and returned my phone. The screen smashed, but the photos intact. Police report updated.”

“The moral of the story? Have an old smartphone that not even a thief thinks is worth having,” added Lara.

Special bond with daughter

Martin and Lara are parents to Sapphire Susan Lewis, who was born in 2012. After the birth of their first child, Martin wrote a special blog about his newborn daughter.

“Her name is Sapphire Susan Lewis and while she weighs a wee 6lb 6oz, her weight in joy is immeasurable,” wrote Martin. “Last night was her first one at home and it was quite exhausting (I think she’s operating in a US time zone for some reason), though worth every second.”

In May this year, Martin confessed that Sapphire had him wrapped around her little finger. “When my daughter was born, I remember saying: ‘I’ll buy her everything she needs, but not everything she wants’. Unfortunately, I didn’t factor in her special power. Those eyes,” he told The Sunday Times.

“I’m helpless and usually resort to saying, ‘Ask mummy’, because mummy is stronger than me. We don’t splurge on her, but one of my greatest joys is making her happy,” he proudly said.

Whatever is going on, Martin makes sure the working day finishes at 6pm so he can spend some time with his little girl before putting her to bed.

It seems the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree as Martin has already nicknamed Sapphire “Mini Money Saving Expert”. Martin told his Twitter followers in June that she was already taking after him and coming up with money saving tips.

He tweeted: “Mini MSE (age 7) said to me smiling tonight, having got some fruit from the fridge “Daddy these grapes are a day over their best-before date, but I know I can eat them still because they’re not use buy, and they still look ok.” I’m very proud. What a chip off the old block :).”

Mother’s tragic death

Martin Lewis was rocked by a devastating family tragedy just three days before his 12th birthday. The money saving expert, who is a patron for charity Grief Encounter, lost his mother Susan Lewis in a tragic road accident while she has horse riding.

Opening up on Radio 5 Live in March 2018, Martin emotionally explained: “When I got home I was told… there had been an accident involving a lorry but no one told me how serious it was. I remember worrying that my mum wouldn’t be there for my birthday.

“The next day my dad told me that she died that morning and that was the end of my childhood, that moment. I cried every day until I was 15 and then I stopped crying and became brittle.”

He developed crippling anxiety, leaving him unable to leave the house as he ‘couldn’t cope’ with the thought of something else bad happening. “My mum was there one day and she wasn’t the next and that was it. This was 1984 and you didn’t have counselling,” said Martin on BBC Four’s Desert Island Discs in June this year.

“My childhood ended that day and I am still not over it.”

Martin, who is Jewish, said he would pretend to be busy with religious events to avoid socialising with his peers outside of school. He added: “It was very difficult because when all my friends from school were going to parties and meeting girls and things like that, which I’d have liked to do, I couldn’t cope with it.

“It was a complete lie, I was a little boy. I was a little boy struggling to deal with something that nobody should be dealing with at that age.”

During a tear-jerking Loose Women interview last year, Martin discussed the moment his world was turned upside down. On the years that followed their loss, with Martin never able to come to terms with it, he said: “My sister, father and I were incredibly wounded for such a long time.”

He told the panellists: “I struggle to remember anything other than the pain. I’m trying to remember the wonderful person I lost, not remember I lost a wonderful person.”

Martin hopes that his daughter never has to go through the same pain. “It was all very sudden. None of us expected it. It’s still something I don’t like talking about. It’s too painful to talk about,” he told the Daily Star.

“It affects me now. It affects me deeply. It affects me in my day-to-day life. It’s one of the building blocks of who I am.

He added: “I close my eyes and pray that my little girl never goes through the pain that I went through. I sit there and think, ‘Just let me be around until she’s 20’. That’s really important to me.”
