Every support base has its fair share of deluded fans. There are still Manchester United followers out there who believe manager Erik Ten Hag and his coaching staff are doing a good job. They couldn’t be more wrong if they tried. United are limping towards the finish line of another abysmal Premier League campaign. It might become so abysmal that they could miss out on European football altogether. Yes, that’s right, they may finish outside the Europa Conference League places. Top clubs don’t belong in the third tier of continental competition, a watered-down version of the Europa League. The elite level of the Champions League is so far out of their grasp right now it’s actually frightening. A 4-0 hammering at the hands of Crystal Palace on Monday is their latest rock bottom.
Benni McCarthy and his next move
The future of attacking coach Benni McCarthy might depend on what happens to manager Erik Ten Hag. The Dutchman pushed for McCarthy to join his coaching staff but the ex-Ajax boss’s situation at the club is becoming more untenable by the week. How can he stay if there’s so much unrest and fan dissatisfaction? CEO Jim Ratcliffe ’emailed Manchester United staff about disgraceful untidiness’ at the ground. That sums up where they’re at right now.

What’s next?
United welcome title-chasing Arsenal next at Old Trafford. It’s been a strange venue this season. The Red Devils have lost home matches against Brighton, Fulham, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Galatasaray. However, they’ve also beaten Aston Villa there in the league and Liverpool in the FA Cup. To say they’re unpredictable is a gross understatement. Expect the unexpected this weekend, perhaps, but a good result against the Gunners won’t start to paper over the enormous cracks in Manchester United’s current plight. One thing is for sure, though. Mikel Arteta’s visitors won’t be in a charitable mood with nothing but a win good enough to keep the title race going until the final day.
