St James’s Hospital in Dublin

A man has been hospitalised following an alleged late-night attack in Dublin city centre on Monday.

Gardaí attached to Pearse Street were alerted to reports of an injured man along Fleet Street at around 10:30pm yesterday evening.

Authorities rushed to the scene and a man, who was aged in his 40s, was subsequently removed from the area and brought to St James’ Hospital for treatment. Gardaí have not confirmed how serious the man’s injuries are.

The scene has been preserved and gardaí have confirmed that investigations into this incident are ongoing.

This incident happened near The Irish Times offices on Tara Street in Dublin, where members of the homeless community have been staying in tents.

A large amount of blood could be seen along the pavement outside of the office this morning, with the area cordoned off with Garda tape with multiple Garda cars and officers in hazmat suits present.

When asked by this publication if the injured party had been sleeping rough at the time of the incident, a spokesperson for gardaí said they have “no additional information at this time”.

The Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí in Pearse Street were alerted to an injured man on Fleet Street, Dublin late last night Monday 29 April at approximately 10:30pm.

“Gardaí attended the scene and the man, aged in his 40s was removed to St. James’s Hospital for treatment. The scene has been preserved and investigations are ongoing. We have no additional information at this time.”

A spokesperson for The Simon Community told the Irish Mirror that while Garda enquiries are ongoing, they cannot comment on specifics of the case, but stressed that it is always an “absolute tragedy” when anyone encounters “tragic incidents on the street”.

They said: “As always, it’s an absolute tragedy when anyone encounters such tragic incidents on the street, and it underlines the vulnerability of people who find themselves without a roof over their head.

“Our dedicated Outreach team uses its professional training and expertise to remove barriers to accommodation for people who are rough sleeping by identifying their needs, referring to wraparound services and advocating on their behalf with services.”
