Man City's Aymeric Laporte details major change that has 'massively' improved his form

Asia's Tech News Daily

Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte believes his decision to play for the Spanish national team has had a positive impact on his club football.

Laporte played for France at youth level and while he was called up to senior squads, he never represented Les Bleus in a competitive match.

With France manager Didier Deschamps deciding against picking Laporte despite developing into one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, the 27-year-old instead opted to change allegiances and play for Spain when he was granted Spanish citizenship earlier this year.

Since that switch, Laporte has slotted into Luis Enrique’s Spain side with ease, helping the team make it to the semi-finals of the European Championships in the summer and the final of the Nations League recently, losing to Italy and France respectively.

Last season Laporte lost his place in the City team, as new signing Ruben Dias formed a brilliant partnership with John Stones.

But the cultured defender has forced his way back into contention again this season with Stones sidelined and he believes the outings for Spain have helped him recapture his best, per the City website.

“I feel very happy, I feel great physically. I have stayed injury free (and) I feel very confident,” said the former Athletic Club centre-back. “Playing for the national team has helped me massively.

“Keeping a good rhythm is important to get the best version of yourself. Since the beginning of the season, I have been working really hard, so my current moment is only the reflection of that. I need to keep working in the same line.

“Playing for Spain, in big games, feeling important, it’s obviously helpful. Playing regularly helps you gain confidence in your game. I feel great.

“I feel the trust from Luis Enrique with Spain and also from Pep Guardiola here. When you have their confidence, it’s easier to play and do your job. I’m very happy with my performance, both at Manchester City and with Spain. I hope I can continue like that all season.”

With Stones back in action over the international break with England, Laporte will be desperate to maintain his place in the City side on Saturday against Burnley.
