Man City ‘falling behind' Euro giant in race for striker with huge release clause

Reigning Premier League champions Man City are ‘losing ground’ in the race for a Brazilian goalscorer, according to reports.

Pep Guardiola knows that a new striker is needed if the club is to continue to challenge over the next few years. They were heavily linked with Harry Kane in the summer but could not prize him away from Tottenham.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy set the Englishman’s price tag at a huge £160million. Man City’s best bid, worth around £100m, was far from being accepted.

There are a number of alternatives being scouted by the club. One is Fiorentina bagsman Dusan Vlahovic. The Serb could move on next summer after rejecting the offer of a new contract.

Erling Haaland is of course on Man City’s radar. He has notched an incredible 70 goals in 69 games since joining Borussia Dortmund in January 2020.

The Citizens are hoping to use their existing links with Haaland to secure a deal. The player’s father, Alf-Inge, made 45 appearances for Man City between 2000 and 2003. Haaland was also pictured wearing a City shirt when he was a youngster.

However, the race for the Norwegian is rather crowded. English rivals Man Utd and Chelsea are also keen to land him from Dortmund. As are European heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

One cheaper player Man City could turn to instead is Internacional’s Yuri Alberto. The Brazilian is certainly not as big of a name, although he does have an impressive record in front of goal.

The 20-year-old managed 18 goals in all competitions last season. That form saw him become one of Internacional’s most valuable stars.

Sport Witness, citing reports in the Brazilian press, provide an update on Alberto’s future. They claim that Italian giants AC Milan have moved ahead of City in the race for his signature.

The Rossoneri already have a ‘verbal agreement’ in place with Alberto for his move. They now need to sort out a fee with his club.

The forward’s release clause currently stands at an astonishing €80m (£58m). Internacional originally held out for that sum but have now lowered their demands.

They will only consider offers worth €20m (£17m) or above. The news means City will have to act fast if they want to sign Alberto.

Is Antonio Conte the right potential Ole Gunnar Solskjaer successor for Man Utd?

Man City to rival Bayern Munich for two players

Italian outlet Calciomercato report that City are prepared to do battle with Bayern for two players.

Guardiola managed the Bavarians between 2013 and 2016, guiding them to three straight league titles. He now wants to rival them for a Dutch playmaker and a skilful winger.

It’s reported that both City and Bayern are interested in Frenkie De Jong. The 24-year-old has been one of Barcelona’s best players during a tough few years.

He would undoubtedly add quality to Guardiola’s midfield. A huge bid would be required to prize him away from Catalonia.

But with Barca’s dire financial situation widely documented, the Catalan giants may be forced into a sale.

The other name on City and Bayern’s wish list is Antony. The 21-year-old currently plays for Ajax. He has managed four goals in ten games so far this campaign and looks set for a bright future.

Ajax’s valuation is unclear, although they do have a history of selling to Europe’s biggest clubs.
