Man City 'are set to resume talks with Raheem Sterling over a new contract' with the champions keen to sort out his future before he enters the final year of his current deal this summer

Manchester City are reportedly set to resume talks with Raheem Sterling over a new contract.

The 27-year-old joined the reigning Premier League champions in 2015 from Liverpool and has gone on to make 319 appearances for the club.

However, the England international will enter the final year of his existing deal at the end of the current season.

ESPN have reported that City are keen to resolve the issue before the end of the campaign.

There had been some doubt earlier in the season whether Sterling would decide to prolong his stay at the Etihad Stadium past 2023.

He had become frustrated after he had lost his place as a regular starter for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Sterling started just three of City’s opening 11 league games this campaign and was left as an used substitute during their 2-0 victory in the Manchester derby at the start of November.

He even admitted back in October that he would consider a move abroad at some point in his career. 

In recent months though Sterling has become a regular part of the City team, starting ten of their last 12 league outings.

Sterling was also voted December’s Player of the Month after netting five goals in four games.

The report states that Sterling’s spell out of the team made him consider a loan move in January but there is growing expectation he will now stay at the Etihad going forward.

Sterling’s situation has alerted some of Europe’s biggest clubs though, with Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid monitoring his contract situation.

Both the player and the club though are said to be ‘relaxed’ about the situation.  

His return to the starting line-up came at a time when Man City pulled away from their nearest rivals Liverpool and Chelsea at the top of the table.

City are nine points clear of Liverpool – though Jurgen Klopp’s side do hold a game in hand over the leaders.
