Mamelodi Sundowns boss Kaizer Chiefs: ALL the key match stats

Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned 2023/2024 DStv Premiership champions on Thursday evening when they thrashed Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium.

Masandawana only needed to win the match to wrap up a seventh consecutive title – and the Tshwane giants did just that in impressive fashion, winning 5-1.

Mamelodi Sundowns scored goals through a second-half brace by Tashreeq Matthews (52nd and 82nd minutes), Matias Esquivel (56th minute) and Lucas Ribeiro Costa (90th minute).

Thembinkosi Lorch rubbed salt into Kaizer Chiefs’ wounds with a fifth goal in the 94th minute.

Kaizer Chiefs replied with a penalty goal in the 85th minute which was converted by Mduduzi Shabalala.

The Glamour Boys were reduced to 10 men when Given Msimango was shown a straight red card in the 19th minute.

Mamelodi Sundowns predictably dominated the various match stats, given their one-sided win.

The title was Mamelodi Sundowns’ 14th since the PSL professional era kicked off in the 1996/1997 season.

Their nearest “challengers” – Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates – have four titles each.

Mamelodi Sundowns wrapped up this season’s title with six matches remaining.

Meanwhile, Amakhosi remained in eighth place in the standings with just 33 points after 26 matches.

The Glamour Boys have struggled this season, particularly in front of goal.

They have only managed to find the back of the net on 22 occasions in those 26 fixtures to date.

Only five teams in the 16-team league have found the back of the net on fewer occasions.

Kaizer Chiefs will still be looking to finish the season on a positive note and claim an MTN8 spot next season.

But the Soweto giants face an anxious few weeks with teams queuing up behind them to snatch that lucrative MTN8 berth from them.
