It is no coincidence that funeral company Dela is now finalizing the takeover of competitor Yarden. Yarden must have his finances in order by August 4. If not, De Nederlandsche Bank can revoke the licence. “We are now averting that scenario, where a million policyholders are left out in the cold,” says Edzo Doeve, general manager of Dela. Yarden has been in the doldrums financially for years and invested money on old funeral insurance policies. So-called in-kind policies, under which a full funeral was reimbursed, were far from covering costs for the funeral company. In 2019 Yarden maximized the benefit of 390,000 insured persons. From then on, policyholders had to pay additional funeral costs due to inflation.
