Mahindra Scorpio N 2023: body-on-frame 4WD will be released in Australia soon

The all-new Scorpio-N has been released in the brand’s home of India, but the body-on-frame SUV will also be coming to Australia

Indian car manufacturer Mahindra is best known in Australia for its basic utes, but in its home market it has just released a new body-on-frame 4WD called the Scorpio-N.

There’s no connection to Hyundai’s well-known N performance range – but the Scorpio-N has been confirmed for an Australian release with local details set to be locked in soon.

Mahindra is focussing the initial release of the Scorpio-N on India, South Africa and Nepal – markets where rough-road capability is especially important.

The Scorpio-N would be an interesting, low-cost competitor to undercut the likes of the Toyota Fortuner or Prado, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and the Isuzu MU-X, and of course the Ford Everest.

What sort of powertrains will be offered with the Scorpio-N?

The Scorpio-N will compete with the Toyota Prado and Ford Everest

The Scorpio-N will be available with both petrol and diesel powertrains at launch. These will include a 149kW/380Nm petrol engine and a 128kW/400Nm turbo-diesel engine.

These two engines will be paired to a part-time four-wheel drive system (meaning that you can switch it on and off as you go and can be driven in two-wheel drive) and will be offered with the choice of either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

What are the standard specifications of the Mahindra Scorpio-N?

The interior of the Scorpio-N will be nicely finished in the higher-grade Z8 trim

The Scorpio-N will be available in India with five different variants: Z2, Z4, Z6, Z8 and Z8 L. The entry-level Z2 includes features such as a multifunction touchscreen, second row air vents, LED tail lights and indicators and electric power steering (for the petrol engine only).

Stepping up to the Z4, owners will receive a larger 8.0-inch central touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality, cruise control, fabric upholstery, hill-descent control and hill-hold control.

In the top of the range Z8 L, the Scorpio-N is fitted with a six-way electric driver’s seat, Sony 3D sound system with 12 speakers, front camera, driver drowsiness detection, front parking sensors, a wireless phone charger and the choice of either 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels. Captain’s chairs are also available for the top spec Z8 L.
