Galway is one of the counties under a Status Yellow Wind warning
Met Éireann has added another county to the Status Yellow Wind warning issued on Monday as very strong winds batter the west coast.
The national forecaster put in place the wind alert for Mayo on Monday evening, with the warning to come into effect in the early hours of Tuesday morning, lasting until 8am.
Issuing the caution, Met Éireann warned there would be “very strong and gusty southwest winds for a time on Tuesday morning”.
Some possible impacts from the heavy winds include falling branches, damage to temporary structures, wave overtopping and difficult travelling conditions.
A separate Status Yellow – Wind warning was also issued on Monday for Clare, Limerick, and Galway. This warning will be valid from 1am on Tuesday morning and will become inactive at 8am.
Furthermore, a Status Yellow – Wind and Rainfall warning was issued for Cork and Kerry, with a forecaster warning From Monday evening to Tuesday morning, there will be very strong and gusty west to southwest winds and spells of heavy rain.
This warning will be lifted at 6am but people in these counties should keep an eye out for localised flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions.
Winds are expected to be most intense by the coast. Met Éireann has also issued a Status Orange – Storm alert from Valentia to Loop Head to Slyne Head, warning that westerly winds will reach storm force 10 at times. This is valid until 5am on Tuesday.
According to Met Éireann, overall, it will be a blustery and rather wet start on Tuesday with outbreaks of rain for most. Brightening up from the south through the morning, though, with sunny spells, as the remaining rain clears away to the north of the country by the early afternoon. Maximum temperatures of 9C to 12C with fresh to strong southwest winds moderating through the day.
