Magnitude 4.1 earthquake recorded in northern Alberta

magnitude 4.1 earthquake recorded in northern alberta

Earthquakes Canada recorded a 4.1 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022, near Peace River.

A mild and early morning earthquake struck a tract of northern Alberta, southeast of Peace River, Natural Resources Canada said.

The federal government’s Earthquake Canada website logged a magnitude 4.1 quake at 12:22 a.m. on Wednesday with an approximate epicentre 352 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.

The monitoring site neither expected nor received reports of damage connected to the incident, which occurred at a reported depth of five kilometres.

“It is very unlikely that an earthquake of magnitude less than five could cause any damage,” the Earthquakes Canada site says in a section dedicated to frequently asked questions.

As of Wednesday night, a community intensity map on the site that sources and documents earthquake experiences from the public registered only one response describing “light” shaking and no damage about 25 kilometres west of the epicentre.

People who want to report their encounter with this earthquake can complete a questionnaire on the Earthquake Canada website.

From April 2001 to February 2022, the 11 largest earthquakes the site recorded in the region range from magnitude 3.9 to 5.4.
