Macy’s Parade Protests and more: Letters to the Editor — Nov. 25, 2023

The Issue: Pro-Palestinian protesters interrupting New York City’s annual Thanksgiving tradition.

The pro-Palestine demonstrators went so low as to stage a protest and disrupt the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade (“Pro-Palestinian protesters glue their hands to 6th Avenue, disrupting Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” Metro. Nov. 23).

This parade commemorates a piece of our country’s history, which of course is why they did this. They also defaced the New York Public Library.

The contrast between good and evil is stark. Can anyone imagine a pro-Israel, pro-Jewish demonstration stooping to these lows?

Hopefully those “River to the Sea” buffoons who glued themselves to the street in protest on Thanksgiving will glue their hands to their beds on Election Day.

These protesters likely all voted for President Biden and former President Barack Obama, but most will now stay home on Election Day. Biden could lose the “Rashida Tlaib vote,” which is millions strong.
That’s good news, as some polls show Biden is also losing the black vote.

Liberal voters were silent as Obama and Biden gave billions of dollars to Iran. Liberal appeasement is a losing ideology. No more negotiating with terrorists, something that leads to the taking of more hostages.
Finally, Joe: no handcuffs on the Israelis. They must defeat Hamas forever.

On Thanksgiving, the protesters were quickly cuffed and hauled away.

They should at least be spending the weekend in jail. People come from all over the world to New York City to see the parade. Millions more watch it on TV. It should be clear that New York won’t tolerate this.

The once-great city of New York continues its sad and shameful descent into lawlessness and disorder.
Thursday’s disruption and desecration of the time-honored and family-friendly Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade should be a clarion call.

The miscreants who tarnished the parade — and selfishly ruined the experience for people of all ages and stripes — should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Turkey and protests do not mix.

The Issue: MTA’s hemorrhaging of millions every year due to fare and toll evasion.

My suggestion for combatting farebeating in New York City’s subway and bus systems would be to lower the fare (“The farebeat leap goes on,” Nolan Hicks, Nov. 23).

Lower the fare? Yes, that’s right: Lower the fare.

For turnstile jumpers who do it for sport or for the challenge, they may find stealing one or two dollars not as rewarding as stealing $2.90.

For those who are under extreme financial duress and watching every penny, a one- or two-dollar fare would be much more affordable than the current $2.90 charge.

The MTA says it lost $690 million to fare and toll evasion in 2022. Now it wants to change the turnstiles, which will most likely cost hundreds of million.

Here is my solution: more police officers by the turnstiles.

Arrest the farebeaters and ask for a $1,000 payment. If they can pay it, hold on to their money for a year.
If they don’t commit another incident of fare evasion, they get their money back. If they are caught again, they forfeit the $1,000, and the money goes to MTA.

Just keep doing this until farebeaters know that they will have to pay to ride the subway one way or another.
