Maandverwachting mei: zoveel zon en warmte krijgen we

De overgang van april naar mei verloopt warm met zonnige perioden en kans op onweersbuien. Zet dit de toon voor heel mei of is de warmte van korte duur?

Net als in april moeten we in mei rekening houden met grillig lenteweer. De maand begint warm met zonnige perioden en kans op regen- en onweersbuien. Tijdens de zonnige perioden kun je genieten in T-shirt, want de temperatuur ligt rond 20 graden, waarbij het in de kustprovincies vaak een aantal graden minder warm is. In het oosten en zuidoosten kan de temperatuur zelfs stijgen richting een zomerse 25 graden. Normaal is het begin mei 15 graden aan zee tot 18 in het zuidoosten van het land.

Maar na de warme start van mei draait de wind naar het noordwesten. Daarmee wordt frissere lucht aangevoerd. Hoe scherp de temperatuurdaling zal zijn is nog wat onzeker, maar waarschijnlijk ligt de temperatuur op Bevrijdingsdag rond 15 graden. Dan is het ineens weer aan de frisse kant. Het weerbeeld bestaat dan uit een mix van wolken, zon en buien.

IJsheiligen doen hun naam eer aan

Zoals het er nu naar uitziet blijft het kouder dan normaal tot en met de ijsheiligen; die van 11-14 mei zijn. Halverwege mei is 16-19 graden ’s middags normaal, nu is 15 graden vaak het maximaal haalbare. ’s Nachts is bij helder weer kans op vorst aan de grond.

Het blijft ook wisselvallig met een mix van wolken, zon en buien. Het is dan ook minder zonnig dan normaal halverwege mei. Maar als de zon schijnt, dan kun je wel gemakkelijk verbranden. In mei is vaak sprake van zonkracht 5-6. Bij zonkracht 6 kan je onbeschermde huid al in 15-30 minuten verbranden.

Warmer, droger en zonniger in tweede helft van mei

De lentedip lijkt na ijsheiligen voorbij. De temperatuur bereikt dan al snel weer normale waarden en eind van de maand wordt het mogelijk zelfs iets warmer dan gebruikelijk. Het wordt gemiddeld eind mei 17 graden in het noordwesten tot 20 in het binnenland. Daarmee neemt de kans op warme dagen in de tweede helft van mei dus duidelijk toe en kan de korte broek misschien wel aan. Waarschijnlijk kunnen we ook droger en zonniger weer verwachten, maar echt stabiel lenteweer lijkt het niet te worden. Het warme weer kan soms resulteren in een stevige regen- of onweersbui.

Piekperiode graspollenseizoen komt eraan

Na de koude weken in april is de voorsprong van de natuur op het normale schema wat afgenomen. Hoewel al vroeg de eerste grassen tot bloei kwamen, is de ontwikkeling daarna flink vertraagd. Het warme weer rond de maandwisseling zal wel meer gras tot bloei laten komen, waardoor de overlast toeneemt. En na de koude periode rond de ijsheiligen zal de piekperiode van het graspollenseizoen beginnen, waarbij het gras massaal groeit en tijdens droge perioden hevige hooikoortsklachten kunnen optreden.
