Large Tesla showroom to be built on outskirts of Lincoln

Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, owned by Elon Musk, is set to build a large showroom and service centre at a business park on the outskirts of Lincoln. Elon Musk is the second richest person on the planet, with an estimated net worth of $182.6 billion — thanks to his business empires SpaceX, X (formerly Twitter) and Tesla.

He has a business presence all over the world — and even a vested offshoot in outer space — now the South African business investor could be about to venture into Lincolnshire for the first time. A planning application submitted to North Kesteven District Council outlines a vision for a large showroom and service centre for his electric vehicle giant Tesla.

The service centre would be 18,000 square feet and be situated on Teal Park off the A46 in Hykeham, with access off Turnstone Road, five miles south west of the city centre. It will consist of one large building for vehicle services, ancillary sales and offices, as well as electric vehicle supercharger points, parking, external lighting and a wash bay.

A reserved matters application was first submitted by Taylor Lindsey Limited in October of last year, and was approved by North Kesteven District Council officers in January 2024. An updated application has now gone in, addressing three conditions listed by officers in the first January approval.

Condition 5, related to tree protection, can be discharged thanks to the updates, as per consultee comments by the tree officer on Friday, February 16, and Lincolnshire County Council Highways has no further objections to the plan. Other conditions included confirmation of lighting provision, which has since been outlined in updated documents (as seen above), and noise levels on site.

Proposed layout for Tesla showroom in Lincoln

The development must begin within two years of this decision, meaning Taylor Lindsey and Tesla have until the start of 2026 to get the first spades in the ground. Taylor Lindsey will complete the construction of the site, with Tesla then covering the fit out of the building when the time arrives.

Should this showroom go ahead, it could be a much-needed pivotal moment in Lincolnshire’s progression towards electric vehicle revolution. Earlier this year, it was reported that Greater Lincolnshire’s 414 public charge stations for electric vehicles was shy of the national average per 100,000 people.

Lincolnshire County Council is currently “deeply involved” in the process of additional charge point provision for the county, securing over £5.5 million of government funding to aid the rollout of more across the region. The number of “supercharger” points at the proposed Tesla showroom is not revealed in the planning documents, but the presence of the world’s most recognisable electric car manufacturer being here in Lincolnshire could help pave the way for those next steps.

With the government banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035, the clock is ticking for electric and hybrid vehicle access to catch up with its fuel-guzzling counterparts.
