Book of condolences opened online for West Midlands Fire Service chief Wayne Brown

A book of condolences has been opened followed the death of the chief of West Midlands Fire Service Wayne Brown. The “influential leader” was tragically found dead at his home in Birmingham on Wednesday (January 24), sparking an outpouring of tributes.

Mr Brown, 50, started his career as a firefighter in East London and spent 27 years at London Fire Brigade where he rose to the role of assistant commissioner. He joined West Midlands Fire Service as deputy chief fire officer in November 2019. He took up the role of chief fire officer in January last year.

On Friday afternoon, West Midlands Fire Service gave a “heartfelt ‘thank you’ to everyone who has taken the time to send their condolences following the death of Wayne Brown, our Chief Fire Officer”, before announcing they had opened an online book of condolence via their website: https://wmfs.link/42uCnER

Messages of love have flooded in following news of his death. Friends and colleagues said he will be “remembered as a wonderful man and outstanding officer.” Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Toby Lewis posted: “What utterly shocking and sad news. A person I worked with and found consistently inspiring and compassionate. RIP.”

The WMFS International Search and Rescue team said they were “shocked and saddened to hear of the death of our CFO Wayne Brown. We extend our thoughts and condolences to Wayne’s family.

“As our CFO Wayne was incredibly supportive of our work and was always proud to recognise our achievements. He will be deeply missed.”

Mark Hardingham, Chair, National Fire Chiefs Council, said: “We are deeply saddened about the death of Wayne Brown, Chief Fire Officer at West Midlands Fire Service.

“Wayne was an outstanding leader in the fire and rescue service. He was a friend and colleague to those in leadership and frontline roles. His commitment, professionalism and passion for representing those who are under-represented in fire and rescue services never ceased and was remarkable.
